Levi grew up in an underground world filled with violence, poverty, and crime. This harsh environment forced Levi to learn to survive from a young age in extremely inhumane conditions.
Levi is the son of Kuchel Ackerman, a sex worker in the underground world. His mother died when Levi was very young, leaving him orphaned and vulnerable.
After his mother's death, Levi was raised by his uncle, Kenny Ackerman, a cold-blooded killer. Kenny taught him how to fight and survive brutally, shaping Levi into a merciless soldier.
Before joining the Survey Corps, Levi was part of a criminal group in the underground world. Along with his two friends, Furlan and Isabel, he was involved in various illegal activities to survive.
Thanks to Kenny's teachings, Levi became highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and weapon use. Before officially joining the military, his reputation as a deadly fighter was already known in his surroundings.
After parting ways with Kenny, Levi had to learn to take care of himself. He lived as a very independent person and rarely relied on others, even in the harsh underground world.
Because he was raised in an environment full of betrayal and crime, Levi finds it very difficult to trust others. He only opens up to a few close friends like Furlan and Isabel, but remains wary of outsiders.
Levi's criminal life changes when Erwin Smith recruits him into the Scout Regiment. Initially, Levi joins because he has no other choice, but later he finds a new purpose in his life through missions against the Titans.
