Lebaran Kupat in Trenggalek falls on Monday, April 7, 2025. The people of Trenggalek celebrate it with a warm atmosphere of family and togetherness. According to Emil Dardak in his post, this tradition has been around since ancient times.
"This tradition began in ancient times, when Mbah Mesir (Sheikh Abdul Mahsyir), a religious figure who gave birth to students and descendants that continued the preaching and development of Islamic boarding schools in the Eastern Mataraman region including Kediri, Blitar, Tulungagung, and Trenggalek, as well as in other areas," wrote Emil Dardak.
"Every month of Syawal, for a week, Mbah Mesir, and later his son, would be invited by the regent to the pendopo. Upon Mbah Mesir's return, the residents would eagerly visit him to pay their respects for Lebaran," he continued.
In various villages, residents hold a communal meal featuring ketupat as the main dish, paired with ayam lodho, sambal goreng, or sayur lodeh. Besides being a form of gratitude after completing the Syawal fast, this tradition also serves as a gathering for socializing among the community and extended families.Â
This celebration is often enlivened with various traditional arts and folk entertainment. The warm atmosphere filled with cultural values makes Lebaran Kupat in Trenggalek highly anticipated every year.
