Already Wearing Hijab and Loose Clothes, Soraya Larasati Experiences Sexual Harassment While Running

On Sunday (5/3/2020), Soraya not only shared stories while running and uploading pictures of shoes. She also expressed her concerns and gave a warning to women to be more cautious when alone outside the house.

"Today, I learned many lessons. From running a long distance around the residential complex, which is usually safe and secure without any problems, it has become a big 'concern' for me and a 'slap in the face'. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic that requires us to #stayathome, it turns out that it is not only to protect our health, but also to protect us from increasing criminal acts," Soraya began her confession.

1. Harassed While Running

Soraya then tells a story about how she started running in the morning around 7 o'clock. In the midst of enjoying her favorite activity, she experienced an unpleasant incident with a stranger.

"In a morning situation at 7 o'clock, in a public place with a lot of vehicle traffic, although not as crowded as usual on Sunday mornings. Turns out this morning I experienced discomfort, being oppressed by a foreign motorcyclist wearing a full-face helmet. I feel like I have been subjected to 'sexual harassment' by the motorcyclist who deliberately touched my chest and then immediately fled. Hit and run. I wasn't able to take a photo of the vehicle's license plate because I was in shock."

2. Can Happen to Anyone

Soraya then explains the chronology of this unpleasant incident, while also mentioning that such things can happen to anyone. Including hijab-wearing women like herself.

"In a running condition, I just focus. Suddenly, someone grabbed my chest from behind. Specifically, the location is in sector 5 Bintaro in front of STAN. There was vehicle traffic there. What caught my attention is that this incident can happen to anyone. Even though I wear a hijab and loose clothing. Coincidentally, I was actually running with my husband and friend. But because we started late, we planned to meet in the middle. They happened to not be with me when the incident occurred. This is an experience that I think is very dangerous, considering that we are women and this criminal act could escalate to a level that we are afraid to imagine." Soraya continued.

3. Not Intending to Sue

Although shocked by what happened to her, Soraya has no intention of filing a lawsuit against the perpetrator because she believes that God will take revenge. Soraya then asked everyone to be careful so that what she experienced would not happen to anyone else.

"I have no intention of demanding anything from the perpetrator, because God's punishment is definitely real. I pray that they will be given guidance because God's punishment is very painful. So, a moral message for the runners, it is better to exercise at home or outside the complex, as much as possible against the flow of traffic to be more alert. And it is better to be accompanied by a mahram to protect oneself," she concluded.
