Bastian Steel Turns Out to Have Made His Co-Star Cry - Reveals the Most Difficult Thing During Filming

Bastian shared how the filming process of SELEPAS TAHLIL went and a slightly awkward incident. Agni, who plays the character Saras, got locked in the bathroom and the bathroom door had to be broken down. What was the excitement like?

1. Never Refused a Film

Host: "Has Bastian ever rejected a film because of the director or co-star? Can you share that?"

Bastian: "Wow, that's a heavy question right away, haha. To be honest, I’ve never rejected a film because, you know, my background is in singing. So every time there’s an offer for a film, it’s something exciting for me. So I’ve really never rejected a film because of the co-star or the director or even the story or the production house. Yes, because the good ones say they enjoy shooting, enjoy creating something like a film, so every time there’s an offer, I’m up for it, you know, sometimes there are just some bad ones, just take it and go for it."
Host: "Yes, the important thing is to do your best, especially since this is for an Indonesian film."
Bastian: "Just try it, experiences like that."

Host: "Oh that’s good, right? Bastian also said earlier that if there’s a film, just take it and do your best, right? Have you ever regretted accepting or rejecting a film offer?"
Bastian: "So, if I have, it means it’s a film that’s already been made, right?"
Host: "Maybe you don’t need to be specific, just share the experience of why."
Bastian: "Honestly, I’ve never regretted it, but sometimes I think, oh man, there must be one film like that. But there’s no regret either, it’s a new experience for me. There was a time I shot with what, almost accidentally leaked. There is one film that might have a new team, so that's how it turns out. But I still try to give my best, especially since the story is set in Toba, my own village, so yeah, whatever."
Host: "So it's not really about the story, but maybe because the team is new, right? Maybe the experience is what matters?
Bastian: "So we are all new, I am also new, right? I can't help much, just help with the acting. As for regrets about films, not really, but sometimes there are really good films, and then the schedule conflicts, so I can't participate. That has happened before."
Host: "So it’s mostly just due to schedule conflicts?"
Bastian: "Yes, that has happened before."

Host: "Seriously, you made your co-star cry?"
Bastian: "Yeah, just because I was mischievous back then, so that was the fun of it, but now there's none of that."

Host: "What makes this film special compared to other horror films, and what made you say yes to being in this film?"
Bastian: "Firstly, what makes this horror special compared to others might be the hope. I hope that as an actor, I can provide not just jump scares or horror that is scary because of the ghosts. But I want to show a side of sadness, the loss of a parent, which is scarier than the ghosts themselves. That’s what I hope to convey as an actor, to show the sadness or a horror that is more about the sadness of losing someone we love."
Host: "Indeed, that is the most horrific event in the world."

Bastian: "That’s my hope as an actor in the film SELEPAS TAHLIL. The reason I chose this is because from the beginning, by the way guys, I was the last one to join the SELEPAS TAHLIL team."
Host: "Last cast?"
Bastian: "Last cast. So they had already started reading, and I just joined suddenly.
Host: "How?"
Bastian: "So at that time, I was contacted by the Visinema studio team, and they sent a synopsis late at night to my mom, and then my mom sent it to me. I read it and was like, 'Okay, let’s go tomorrow morning for the screen test.' Because the story is really good. The cast had already been informed because they were already fixed. So I was like 'come on let’s go with Kang Epy again, I want to let’s go.' We immediately went for the screen test and it turned out to be a match for the role, cool!"

Host: "Wow so this really came out of nowhere suddenly..."
Bastian: "Thank you to the casting director for still remembering me, suddenly thought of me."
Host: "Wow exciting, hopefully it can be a film that is what..."
Bastian: "It must be different."
Host: "Of course it will be different."
Bastian: "Yes, I hope so because we can see that horror films are really abundant now, so the hope is to provide a film that is different from the others."

4. Assisted by Several Actors to Build the Character

Bastian: "Honestly, with all the new actors, it's my first time shooting together. So the impression is very, very pleasant because at the time I was telling earlier, I was the last to join while they had already started the reading process. So when I entered, I was already a bit stressed and nervous because I was just coming in and hadn't created my character, while they were already halfway through. But it turns out that my co-stars were very kind and not arrogant. (They) helped me try again from the beginning and helped create my role as Yudhis, so the first impression with Agni and Kang Epy and others was really happy. I was really helped and supported to create all the characters as one."

5. The Most Difficult Moments During Film Shooting

Host: "From the roles you have played, is there one that you like the most or one that you don’t like about Yudhis?
Bastian: "What I like the most is because it’s the first time I’m playing a role that involves expressing fear, and also crying, which is something new for me. So I’m really happy to portray Yudhis because I can explore acting that I haven’t done before. Crying out of fear is something new, so I’m really happy to play Yudhis."
Host: "Okay.."
Bastian: "It’s really hard, I swear, seriously guys, when we watch it, it seems easy to see him scared and feeling threatened, but doing it is really tough."
Host: "That’s why I think crying is the most difficult acting."

Bastian: "It’s hard, yes, because it really has to be felt."
Host: "Exactly, so how do you learn to be able to cry so you can..."
Bastian: "That’s why I’m really thankful to have friends who truly support and help to discuss how to solve
my own question about how to cry, so I ended up talking a lot with Kang Epy and the acting coach, and overall I finally understood that
the way is like that."
Host: "When was the last time you cried in real life?"
Bastian: "In real life, it’s quite rare for me."
Host: "That’s why it’s gonna be so hard?"
Bastian: "That makes sense too."

Bastian: "Because Yudhis really loves his father, you know. So I really have to be sad."

6. Difficulties When Learning Javanese

Bastian: "Very Javanese, haha."
Host: "So how did you dive into that role and learn the Javanese language?"
Bastian: "That’s one of the challenging things because honestly it’s quite heavy since Javanese has many variations, like Central Java, East Java, and others, which have different languages and even different accents. It became a topic of discussion in the reading session because I didn’t know which Javanese to use."
Host: "You’ve got the accent down, right?"
Bastian: "Yeah, just wait and see..."
Host: "Maybe we’d like to hear a sentence in Bastian’s Javanese accent. Do you want to hear it, friends from Movieverse? Okay, one sentence in Javanese.

7. Agni Locked in the Bathroom Until the Door Had to be Broken Down

Host: "So this is a horror movie, is Bastian here? Usually, in horror movies, the location is also, hmm you know, is there a moment that made you shiver when you entered the set or during the shoot, or were there any unexpected events?"
Bastian: "Honestly, I'm not afraid of ghosts or anything like that, that's what makes it difficult."
Host: "But afraid of losing, right?"
Bastian: "No, I think I'm already a ghost, ha ha. So indeed
it's one of the things I mentioned earlier, it's really hard to act scared because maybe I'm not too afraid of mystical things. But there was an incident where I was shooting and got locked in, and yes, our set was real, and I finally felt what it was like to be scared after doing that scene. So at first, I was never afraid, but during that scene, I was supposed to be trapped in a warehouse, that's when I first felt, 'Oh, so this is scary, this is what it feels like to shiver.' And it really was chilling because there were
already ghosts on set and everything. I just felt like, wow!"

Host: "Where is this location, Bastian?"
Bastian: "Eh, the location is a secret, guys."
Host: "Oh, a secret."
Bastian: "Don't use it for other shoots, okay?"
Host: "Oh, don't, okay."
Bastian: "Because our habit is after using it for one shoot, it gets used everywhere."

Bastian: "Just kidding, but yeah, I finally got to feel the mystical vibe to the point where I wanted to hurry up and finish asking the director
what they wanted and how they wanted it, then the cameraman also wanted to know how the POV should be. So that if possible, we could do it in one take and move on to the next shot, next shot, because it was that exciting. It was worse
for Agni."

Bastian: "Locked in the bathroom for 40 minutes."
Host: "How could that happen?"
Bastian: "It couldn't be opened at all, so during that 40 minutes process, the ending had to be broken down."
Host: "Is this place really known for its mystical occurrences?"

Bastian: "But actually, as a full team, we definitely have to be polite and maintain decorum to prevent any unwanted occurrences from happening. Well, it seems that kid is a bit hyperactive, right? It seems a bit mischievous, like a little devil. 'Wow, this one seems good.' But really, for 40 minutes he couldn't get out again
during the shooting process until we stopped shooting because we were waiting for him to come out of the bathroom. He was urinating and then tried to open the door but couldn't. Luckily, he brought his phone and called his assistant outside, until we, what, until the crew had to pry it open with something to get the hinge open but it still didn't work, so in the end, they had to break it."
Host: "What scene was this during...?"
Bastian: "No, this scene was really real, we weren't shooting, he wanted to take a break to go to the toilet to urinate but couldn't get out until the shooting was waiting for him until I said, 'Come on, the ghost is ready, I want to shoot now.'"
Host: "It was already midnight then...?"
Bastian: "It was already dawn, it was already dawn."
Host: "Oh, wow, so the shooting was really real like that?"
Bastian: "Real until the night, it really was night."

8. The Hardest Part When Shooting

Bastian: "The part... oh yes, when finding out that my father passed away."
Host: "Ah, I'm so sorry to hear that."
Bastian: "Yes, so during the reading, it felt like it was just like that
we went through it, but when he entered the set, it turned out to be heavier and felt different to take that scene, and that was one of the scenes that I felt really impacted me as well."
Host: "So, in general, what do you think is the biggest challenge of acting in horror films compared to other genres?"
Bastian: "As I mentioned earlier, it seems like acting fear is the hardest
yes, because I'm not really afraid of the mystical, so that's what I was trying to figure out
it's something new for me."

Host: "Which is harder, crying acting or fear acting?"
Bastian: "I think fear acting."
Host: "Fear acting, huh?"
Bastian: "I swear it's really hard, but if the fear is from being scolded by parents, it seems easier because I'm used to it, that's the only thing that feels heavy."
Host: "Okay, but so far in your film career, what do you like the most about what you've done? What genres do you like the most?"
Bastian: "Oh, as for genres, I like anything, especially new things, I really enjoy that. That's why this film is special for me because it's been almost a year since I've shot anything, so this is finally Bastian shooting again in the film SELEPAS TAHLIL with a horror genre."

9. Bastian Enjoys Being a Public Figure

Bastian: "Don’t say that."
Host: "Which one does Bastian prefer?"
Bastian: "I like both, if I have to choose, I really dream of getting a good film with a good story, like SELEPAS TAHLIL again."
Host: "Okay, that sounds fun! Now, what are the downsides of being a child artist?"
Bastian: "The downside of being a child artist, oh, what is it now? Is it being an artist now or a child artist, from being a child until now?"
Host: "From being a child until now."
Bastian: "Maybe losing something, there are pros and cons actually
so I just balance it out, I don’t really feel the pressure. For example, when people say you can’t play when you were a kid, but I actually think my hobby and happiness come from playing, like singing or shooting, so it’s like I didn’t really lose anything, right? Sometimes people like to say what is it."
Host: "So it’s like a playground, right?"
Bastian: "Yes."
Host: "So it’s like working but also playing."
Bastian: "It feels like I’m just hanging out on stage or on the shooting location."
Host: "Is there anything unpleasant?"

Bastian: "Maybe just the privacy issue, yes, from a young age I’ve felt what it’s like to have no privacy and everyone knows me, which is actually good, and luckily I’m the type of person who enjoys it. If people notice me, it’s like okay, I’m an artist, but there are some who think that privacy is the most important thing, like it’s hard to even eat. But luckily for me, since I’ve been like this since I was little, I just enjoy it until now, like when I want to eat or when I’m suddenly on the sidewalk and someone shouts, 'Hey Bastian! Hey!' I just want to enjoy it. So if someone asks for a photo or to chat, I’m okay with that.

how was the shooting process and also with the other cast members?
Bastian: "Eh, day one was definitely a bit stiff at first because of getting to know the other teams who had never been in the office during the reading preparation, that was for sure. Day two was the same, day three maybe started to loosen up, day four was finally really fun, the shooting was great, everything was on time, no problems, eh, it was already the last day."
Host: So the shooting was only 5 days?"
Bastian: No way, because it felt so natural, it didn't even feel like the last day."

Host: "I thought it was only 5 days, that was fast."
Bastian: "If it were 5 days, it would be just for YouTube and reels, haha."
Host: "So how many days was the total shooting?"
Bastian: "Total was about almost two weeks because we didn't move around a lot, we didn't have many locations, so there wasn't too much moving around. Sometimes moving takes time, luckily we didn't have to move much. My father had passed away, moving around made it hard for the kids who were about to bury him, you know

Bastian: "A lot, definitely a lot. I have done many screen tests, even though I didn't get accepted, that's okay, but I have done a lot. There's no way I suddenly got a role, that seems impossible. If that happens, it probably means that the character really suits me, like Bastian Steel, because the character in the film definitely adjusts to the character present in the film. So I must have auditioned and screened a lot."

Host: "Okay, the current auditions, right? Maybe Bastian started as a singer, so auditioning for a film is not easy. Can you tell us about your first audition?"
Bastian: "Ha ha ha, I was trembling, you know. I swear, during my first audition, I think I was still a kid. I was auditioning for a commercial, I think it was a commercial, and it was like a typical audition

he kept telling me to wait and repeat again. I said, 'I think I can't anymore, but you can do it, try reading it again, relax, then we screen test again,' but it took 4 hours and I was chosen by the director
