Being Transgender, Oscar Lawalata Reveals There Was Resistance from Family

Kapanlagi.com - Oscar Lawalata has just made a confession through his family's Youtube channel, The Lawalatas. After his mother, Reggy Lawalata, shared her feelings about Oscar's confession, now it's the designer's turn to share his story as a transgender.

Oscar tells that he himself experienced a great inner turmoil. Of course, this became even more difficult when he had to explain this issue to his family. Although in the end, his mother and his brother, Mario Lawalata, said they could accept his condition.

"Well, my family is also different in accepting social judgment compared to me. Maybe they have their own way, and I have my own way. But if they are asked, 'Oh, what is this? Why does it have to be like this?'. It's not comfortable for them. So, this uniqueness also involves clashes from them to understand me. And I myself understand that this understanding indeed requires special skills," said Oscar.

1. Find a Way to Explain

When he wanted to explain his situation to his family, Oscar had to find a way to be understood. Fortunately, behind all of that, he believed that his mother and sister were two open-minded people.

"I did think about how to explain it. But one thing I held onto, I knew that my mother and sister are open-minded. However, they themselves are still in the process of being open-minded. Because they haven't experienced what I have. But they try to understand what I'm going through. But they can't measure what's inside me, only I can measure that. So, I think they don't know to what extent I feel in the end," he explained.

2. Not Understood for a Long Time

Oscar has felt a lot of heartache all this time. But however, he tries to understand from other people's perspectives. If many people now see his family as always harmonious, for Oscar, it took a long journey to get to that point.

"If people see us as harmonious, the journey is not like that. There must be a process of getting to know each other. And in the end, with collisions, if asked, if I want to follow, my heartache, my disappointment, there must be. But at the moment when I'm disappointed and heartbroken, they always say, 'We accept you, but sometimes we don't understand what you are'. It's uncomfortable to be ignored, like, 'How come after all these years you still don't understand how I am?', like that," Oscar recounted.

3. Keep Accepting Family Opinions

In the end, besides asking to be understood, Oscar also learns to understand the feelings of the people around them. Even though it means, they feel hurt.

"But I internalize it again, what comes out of their mouths, it's their honesty, even though it hurts me. If measured by hurt, it will definitely hurt. Because for me, fighting for myself alone is not that easy," he concluded.
