On January 22, Cha Eun Woo was reported to have been examined by Investigation Bureau 4 of the Seoul Regional Tax Office regarding allegations of tax evasion. The examination took place the previous year and resulted in a tax additional notice from the National Tax Service. The report stated that the additional tax imposed exceeded 20 billion won or about 13.6 million US dollars.

On January 26, 2026, Cha Eun Woo finally posted a written statement through his personal Instagram account. He opened the post with an apology to the public. “Hello, this is Cha Eun Woo. I sincerely bow my head and apologize for causing concern and disappointment,” he wrote.

In his statement, Cha Eun Woo referred to this incident as a moment of deep reflection. He highlighted his attitude towards his obligations as a citizen, particularly regarding taxes. “I have been contemplating whether my attitude towards my obligations as a citizen, especially regarding taxes, has been strict enough,” he wrote.

He was concerned that a lengthy clarification would actually trigger negative perceptions in the eyes of the public. “I was worried that an overly long explanation would sound like an excuse or even lead to misunderstandings,” he wrote.

Although he initially held back, Cha Eun Woo ultimately felt the need to make a statement directly. He believes that speaking openly is part of his responsibility. “I have come to the conclusion that it is my duty to address this issue directly and to express my apology,” wrote Cha Eun Woo.

He emphasized that his decision to enlist in the military is not related to an attempt to avoid controversy. “I am writing this after completing my daily duties in the unit.
