Charly Van Houten Cries After Seeing Video of Satpol PP Member Destroying Ukulele

The vocalist of the band Setia Band admitted to shedding tears when he saw the video of a member of the Pontianak Satpol PP destroying a ukulele. According to him, what the officer did was painful to musicians.

"Whatever the reason, it's already painful to watch for artists, especially musicians. Moreover, in this pandemic, artists and musicians are struggling. Then seeing one of the musical instruments being used as a pickaxe by musicians being shown, displayed, and destroyed. Isn't there a more appropriate way to do it?" said Charly Van Houten when contacted on Tuesday (8/6).

Charly said there are other ways to secure the musical instruments of street musicians who are caught in raids. The important thing is not to destroy the musical instruments just like that.

"It shouldn't be like that. This really offends everyone. It's very inappropriate, not educational, not good. The guitar can be taken care of, given to a studio. Even if the reason is that it hasn't been taken for two years, it doesn't have to be destroyed, and it's a musical instrument and an art tool," he said.

For Charly, all art tools including ukulele are priceless. To prevent the same incident from happening, Charly hopes that the government can provide space for street musicians to showcase their talents, especially in the field of music.

"Artworks that are priceless. It's not just that simple. It's not just ukulele, guitar, not just that. Hopefully, this will encourage good education," said Charly.

"For the government, they should also pay attention to street children, street friends who perform, and provide them with a place and space. The guidance should be taken seriously. It shouldn't just be limited to that," he concluded.
