Creating the Superhero Film 'SATRIA DEWA: GATOTKACA', Hanung Bramantyo Reveals Expensive Budget for Flying Scenes

Kapanlagi.com - After years of anticipation, the superhero film SATRIA DEWA: GATOTKACA has finally released its official first look ahead of its premiere in June 2022. In the promotional material, it features scenes of Gatotkaca flying and fighting in the sky.

To create those scenes, Hanung revealed that they fully utilized CGI effects. And the software used was not arbitrary. It had to be licensed and came at a high price.

"We created a 3D human figure, and there is copyrighted software that must be genuine. So, it's software that we have to purchase, and it has a high value," said Hanung, who was met at Pacific Place, SCBD area, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (22/2/2022).

1. Unable to Use Old Technology

Hanung Bramantyo admitted to learning a lot in the making of the superhero film SATRIA DEWA: GATOTKACA. Initially, he assumed that flying scenes could be done using a sling and captured manually. However, it turned out that method is outdated and no longer relevant in today's era.

"We can't use the old technology of using a sling for the flying scenes. I thought we could shoot it normally. But when combined with the sky background, it didn't match. It looked like it was from the past and didn't blend well. So, I discarded all the footage and replaced it with 3D," said Hanung.

2. Initially Wanted to Minimize CGI

Due to his lack of knowledge, Hanung Bramantyo initially thought that CGI was not necessary for this shoot. However, during the editing process, it became necessary to use CGI to make it look good.

"Initially, we tried to minimize the use of CGI, but in the end, we still needed it. When people talk about Gatotkaca, they expect him to be able to fly, so the expectations are different," explained Zaskia Adya Mecca's husband.

3. Be Grateful for the Pandemic Barrier

The release of the superhero film SATRIA DEWA: GATOTKACA was hindered by the pandemic. Nevertheless, Hanung Bramantyo is grateful because in the end, he and the Satria Dewa Studios team were able to improve it.

"This pandemic is a blessing. Because we can see it again, correct it again, make more adjustments. Because what we see on gadgets and screens is very different. Because what looks cool on gadgets, when viewed on a big screen, requires many revisions," said Hanung.
