For 'ANGEL POL', Michelle Ziudith Willing to Train in Koplo Singing and Master the Eastern Javanese Dialect

Michelle Ziudith shows extraordinary commitment in her latest film project, Angel Pol. Playing the role of Lastri, Michelle not only acts deeply but also challenges herself to learn a new culture: from the Eastern Javanese language to singing koplo songs. The actress, born in Medan, admits that this role has become one of the most challenging experiences in her career.

"I was born in Medan Melayu, and the last language I usually used while shooting was Javanese Kromo. This time, it’s very much Eastern Javanese. I automatically learned the intonation and pronunciation again," Michelle said during the press conference for Angel Pol in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (17/6).

Not only is she required to speak in Javanese dialogues, but Michelle is also expected to sing full Javanese koplo songs. Some of the songs she performs, such as Pepes Rempelo and Tembang Ani Ani, are important parts of this film, which is rich in local musical nuances.

"The songs are fully in Javanese, especially the song Pepes Rempelo, and then there’s Tembang Ani Ani. I trained for singing, then recorded. I put in extra effort," she said.

Michelle underwent an intense preparation process for a month. She attended in-depth workshops on language, songs, and lyric interpretation. During this process, Michelle also interacted directly with the producer to build a strong understanding of the character and message of each song.

"A month-long workshop, previously discussing the possible singing styles, what the lyrics would be like, how to tell the story," she explained.

The recording experience marks a new chapter in Michelle's journey as an actress. She did not expect to undergo such a complex and detailed vocal training and studio recording process.

"The recording studio, then vocal training, it turned out to be incredibly detailed and lengthy. It took about a month to finish the song," she revealed.

The dangdut koplo genre presents a unique challenge for Michelle. She admits she has never directly engaged with this genre before, but her eagerness to learn has allowed her to overcome those difficulties.

"I feel really challenged because koplo music is indeed difficult, with many instruments that are very foreign to me. Usually, I never listen to it, but over time I can accept it; it's a mix but it works," she said.

Angel Pol is a comedy-drama film set against the backdrop of dangdut koplo music, directed by Hanny R. Saputra and produced by Johansyah Jumberan and Victor G. Pramusinto.

This film tells the story of Jati (Bhisma Mulia) and Lastri (Michelle Ziudith), who both become victims of injustice and ultimately unite to form a traveling orchestra on a stage truck. The local atmosphere and social satire are the main strengths of this film.

In addition to acting, Michelle also lends her voice to four film theme songs: Pepes Rempelo, Angel Pol, Tembang Ani-Ani, and LDR (Layer Dungo Restu). These songs have also been released on various digital platforms

It's no wonder that the public is now starting to see a new side of Michelle Ziudith, who not only acts but can also sing dangdut with full emotion. The film Angel Pol will start screening in cinemas across Indonesia on June 19, 2025.
