It Has Become a Trademark, Iga Massardi 'Barasuara' Retires Wearing Batik on Stage

A musician's stage appearance often becomes an identity closely tied to their image. This is also true for Iga Massardi, the vocalist and guitarist of the renowned band Barasuara. For years, Iga has been closely associated with his distinctive batik shirt in every performance.

However, the Storm Riders, the term for Barasuara's fans, must have noticed a significant change in their idol's fashion style in recent years. Iga no longer wears the batik that had been his trademark for over a decade.

When asked about the change, Iga Massardi casually explained that he had made that decision a few years ago. Specifically, he started to remove batik from his stage presence around 2019, coinciding with the era of Barasuara's second album, Pikiran dan Perjalanan."I stopped wearing batik in 2019," said Iga Massardi when met at Krapela, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (14/11/2025).

The reason behind his decision turned out to be quite simple. After faithfully wearing batik since 2014, Iga felt bored and wanted to try something new to refresh his appearance on stage.

"Yes, actually it was because I wanted to move on from my appearance, you know, since I had been wearing batik from 2014 until almost 2019. Eventually, I felt like I wanted to change because I was getting bored with it," he explained.

Nevertheless, the 40-year-old musician emphasizes that his decision is not at all based on negative sentiment towards batik. He still appreciates batik as a cultural heritage, and this change is purely due to his personal desire to explore a different style.

"But I have nothing against batik or anything. I really just feel like trying something new," Iga asserted.

When asked whether this change in style is related to age, Iga responded with a joke. According to him, as one gets older, they should actually become more synonymous with batik.

"The older you get, the more batik you should wear, right? But I just want to try something new," he concluded, laughing.
