Once a Salesperson, DJ Mimo Reveals that Now He Often Performs Abroad - Turns Out He's a Master's Graduate

After working as a marketing professional in several private companies, Maya switched gears and succeeded in becoming a disk jockey (DJ) with the famous name DJ Mimo.

Although she has only been involved in the world of disk jockeying on a live streaming platform for 2.5 years, DJ Mimo has performed several times in foreign countries such as Hong Kong, Cambodia, and Macau. Recently, she was invited to perform at the MEEM Festival and Black Out event Vol.2 in Mexico next year.

“This is like a smaller version of Tomorrowland event. I feel proud to be invited to Mexico. Among all the DJs on the live streaming platform, only I was invited,” said DJ Mimo in Jakarta.

As a graduate of S2 Communication from a private university, she shared that she had worked as a marketing professional at Kalbe Farma, a subsidiary of Kompas Gramedia, and Indofood. Recently, she had signed a contract with a Japanese company, but it was canceled due to the pandemic.

Being jobless, Maya creates content by chatting and occasionally singing on the Bigo live streaming application. Although she has become a brand ambassador for the application, Maya feels that she is not growing and unlikely to earn a large income.

Next, Maya is learning DJing to create live streaming content on another application. But by her teacher, Maya was thrown directly into a club in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), Jakarta. Shortly after, Maya chose to create live streaming content with the name DJ Mimo.

"Mimo is an abbreviation of Minnie Mouse, a cartoon character from Disney. Since high school, I have liked Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. At first, I wanted to use my own name, DJ Maya, but it felt less interesting," said the woman born in Jakarta on October 23, 1988.

1. Enjoy Being a DJ

Because she carries the Trance & Techno music genre, DJ Mimo admitted that her viewers mostly come from abroad such as America, Canada, Japan, Korea, and others. As time goes by, DJ Mimo learns to create and remix songs.

DJ Mimo's performance attracted an event organizer who invited her to perform in Mexico on May 17, 2025, and May 24, 2025. For that special moment, she plans to create an original song that will be released in Mexico. DJ Mimo herself already has two original songs titled LIGHT and DREAMS.

Maya admits to enjoying life as a DJ despite changing her lifestyle. In the afternoon, she has to sleep and wake up at 10 PM. After getting ready, at midnight DJ Mimo live streams until 6 AM. The management targets DJ Mimo to perform 22 days, 120 hours every month. Therefore, she set up a studio in her house.

She feels grateful because as a single mom, her twin children understand her work. "So I'm like a super wonder woman. In the morning before they go to school, I prepare everything they need. After they leave, I sleep. When they come home, I'm already awake and chat with them," said the number 23 female DJ in Indonesia.

The youngest of three siblings is used to living independently. When she was 22 years old, both of her parents passed away within a short period of time. When she was still in junior high and high school, she studied modeling at John Casablanka Modelling School in the Melawai area, South Jakarta. Maya was selected as one of the top 50 models for the Kawanku Magazine cover.

2. Already Honed

DJ Mimo's singing talent has been honed since childhood by his late father, a piano player. That's why, when learning DJing, Maya managed to graduate quickly with only four meetings.

“Being a DJ requires talent. We have to adjust the tempo, how to smoothly transition from one song to another without people realizing it,” said DJ Mimo, who has a motto: If others can do it, I can definitely do it.

DJ Mimo admitted that his income from live streaming is greater than working in an office. Every live streaming performance can earn him IDR 5-10 million. In one month, he can earn up to IDR 100 million. “But it requires sacrifices and hard work. My life has turned upside down, mornings become nights, nights become mornings,” said DJ Mimo.

In the future, DJ Mimo aspires to play at Tomorrowland and share the stage with his idol, DJ Armin Van Buuren. DJ Mimo hopes to achieve this dream before the age of 45.
