Portrait of Laura Theux Who Was Devastated When She Couldn’t Give Birth Naturally, Reveals Pressure from Netizen Comments

Artist Laura Theux shared an emotional story about her failure to give birth naturally. Despite her hard efforts to maintain her health and regularly exercise during her pregnancy, Laura ultimately had to undergo a cesarean section due to a medical condition that made it impossible.

This was shared by Laura when she was met with her husband, Indra Brotolaras, in the area of Jalan Kapten Tendean, Mampang, South Jakarta, on Monday (26/5/2025). They shared their experiences while welcoming the birth of their first child, Wayan Victoria Semesta Brotolaras.

"Honestly, I was really devastated when I couldn’t give birth normally. From the beginning, I exercised, I tried everything to be able to give birth normally, but in the end, I had to face the reality that it wasn’t possible, so of course, that hope was shattered. What made the comments about cesarean sections a burden was, honestly, the words of people," said Laura.

Indra explained that the decision for a cesarean operation was made because the baby's condition was already too large for a normal delivery. At 37 weeks of pregnancy, their baby weighed 4.2 kg and was estimated to reach 4.6 kg if they waited until 40 weeks."Not many people know that Laura had a cesarean, because our child was already 4.2 kg at week 37. The doctor recommended a cesarean that same day, because if we waited until 40 weeks, the weight could reach 4.6 kg," said Indra.

Laura added that based on medical standards, babies weighing more than 4 kg are indeed not recommended to be delivered normally. Nevertheless, the decision still emotionally impacted her."The standard for a baby to be delivered normally is a maximum of 4 kg, while at that time Victoria was 4.2 kg. So whether we waited until next week or tomorrow, she couldn't be delivered normally," said Laura.

She admitted that the mental burden she felt did not only stem from the failure to give birth normally but also from comments on social media. Some of them stated that a mother is not ‘whole’ if she has not given birth normally.

"After giving birth, the baby still sleeps a lot, and I read the comments, and that’s what made me have baby blues, one of the triggers was because I read people's comments, all kinds of things," Laura said.

Indra also acknowledged that negative comments from netizens had shaken Laura's mental condition. According to him, this was greatly influenced by hormonal changes after giving birth."Laura experienced baby blues because there were many comments from netizens," Indra revealed.

Even so, Laura chose to refocus on her and her baby's condition. She emphasized that the safety of the mother and child is the most important thing in the childbirth process, regardless of the method used."But again, others don't know what the outcome is like. We have made efforts; the important thing is that the mother and baby are safe, and we follow the doctor's advice," said Laura.

Furthermore, Laura also highlighted the stigma against mothers who give birth via cesarean section. She believes that this view is very misguided and harmful, as the cesarean process is just as challenging as giving birth naturally."Well, those are the words that are often said by mothers who have had cesarean births, 'you haven't fully become a mother if you haven't given birth naturally.' Where do these words come from?" Laura asserted.
