According to the official website of Surakarta City Government, the Satu Suro night parade is a centuries-old tradition in the Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat that has been going on for hundreds of years.

During the Satu Suro night parade, thousands of people crowd along the parade route. Usually, the parade starts at 11:00 PM.

The procession route generally starts from the Keraton Solo, and passes through several main roads in the city of Surakarta to return to the palace.

All participants of the procession wear black clothing. Male participants wear black traditional Javanese attire or Jawi jangkep attire. Meanwhile, female participants wear black kebaya.
