1. Synopsis

Made in Abyss is an anime that tells the adventure of two children into a mysterious hole called the Abyss in the city of Orth. The story centers around Riko, an orphan girl who aspires to become a White Whistle like her mother, Lyza, who disappeared in the depths of the Abyss. The Abyss is filled with ancient artifacts but also a deadly curse that threatens the lives of explorers.

Riko discovers Reg, a half-robot boy from the first layer of the Abyss, who saves her from danger. Reg has lost his memory but decides to accompany Riko in search of her mother after finding a letter from Lyza stating, "I am waiting for you at the bottom of the Abyss". The two of them embark on a secret journey into the depths, leaving their friends at the Belchero orphanage.

In the early layers, Riko and Reg face a strange ecosystem with dangerous creatures and mild curse effects like dizziness. They learn to survive while collecting valuable relics, but as they go deeper, the curse worsens with symptoms like vomiting and hallucinations. Their adventure is filled with awe at the beauty of the Abyss, contrasting with its horrors.

Upon reaching the third layer, they encounter Ozen the Unbeatable White Whistle, who brutally tests their strength. Ozen reveals the secrets of Lyza and warns of the dangers of deeper layers, including body transformations due to the curse. Despite being severely injured, Riko and Reg escape and continue to the fourth layer.

Here, they are attacked by ferocious creatures until Reg uses his powerful weapon, the Incinerator. They meet Nachi, a former student of Ozen who carries past trauma, and learn about the victims of the Abyss curse like Miti. Riko's struggles become increasingly emotional as he faces betrayal and death.

The journey continues with the mystery of Reg's identity related to the Abyss, as well as clues about a hidden village and a magical egg in the lower layers. Riko desperately confronts the hell of the curse for the sake of his mother, revealing the dark side of the Abyss filled with suffering and human transformation. This synopsis covers the first season, with continuations in the movie and manga.
