Gintama is an anime set in an alternative Japan during the Edo period, but with an alien invasion and modern technology that is unusual for that time. The story centers around Gintoki Sakata, someone who was once a respected samurai but now works as a yorozuya or jack-of-all-trades. Together with his assistants, Shinpachi and Kagura, Gintoki faces various absurd missions as well as serious conflicts arising from his past and political situations. Although wrapped in humor, the anime can be a serious one with a deep storyline.
