In response to this controversy, Ustad Derry Sulaiman explained that a brief pause in the ijab kabul is still considered valid according to Islamic law.
"In my opinion, three seconds is still reasonable; if it were 30 seconds, that would be unreasonable, at most it would need to be repeated," said Ustad Derry.
"Maxime's situation yesterday was not a problem in my view; it was not an issue. It is valid," he stated, giving his opinion.
"That is still within a reasonable limit, no issue. If there is a long pause, actually a person can swallow saliva for three seconds, you swallow and then take a breath," replied Ustad Derry Sulaiman, quoted on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from Youtube Intens Investigasi.
For Ustaz Derry Sulaiman, it is understandable because someone might feel nervous. It would actually be strange if he was completely fluent. "Or maybe he was nervous, since it was Maxime's first time doing the ijab kabul. If a person is already a professional, having been married multiple times, they might be quicker," he continued.
