The Story Behind Steven & Coconut Treez's Name Change to Coconut Treez, Turns Out It Was Late Steven Kaligis' Idea Before He Passed Away

Kapanlagi.com - One of the well-known reggae bands in Indonesia, Steven & Coconut Treez, has patented a new name for themselves, Coconut Treez. Yup, the band has removed the name of their late vocalist, Steven N Kaligis.

But who would have thought, a lot happened when the band members decided to change their name. Including the late Steven as the vocalist before he passed away.

1. Starting from the Late Steven's Remark

Rival, the bassist of Coconut Treez, when met in the Panglima Polim area, South Jakarta, not long ago, told how this decision started from the late Steven's remark before he passed away. He also confirmed that the vocalist's wish was expressed several months before his death.

"Initially, in 2017, we changed the name to Seven & Coconut Treez, but a year before that, our late vocalist had suggested to remove 'Steven' and just use 'Coconut Treez'," said Rival.

2. Wishing for More Unity among Members

At that time, Rival said that the late Steven Kaligis had reasons for changing the name to be more united with the other members. Because initially, Steven & Coconut Treez was a solo singer who performed with a band, but over time, it became a reggae band.

"At that time, he said it was to blend in. Initially, Steven & Coconut Treez was a solo singer with a band. Then, because now we feel like a family, he suggested to remove the name. That was a few months before the late Steven passed away, and we patented the name as Coconut Trezz," he added.

3. Many Pros and Cons

In the same occasion, Aci as the drummer also said that there were indeed many pros and cons before he and his colleagues agreed to the late Steven Kaligis' wish. Rival also confirmed this because according to him, everything had to start from scratch to make a new name stick like an old name.

"There are pros and cons, but the late Steven was really insistent on changing to Coconut Treez. Finally, we voted. Because we ourselves wanted to use the name Steven & Coconut Treez, finally in 2020 it became Coconut Treez," said Aci.

"The late Steven kept asking us, 'if you're sure, let's do it', but actually we found it difficult to risk a big name. Because letting go of a big name is like wearing a new shirt again. It's a dilemma, but we have to, because it's what the late Steven wanted and he was the leader of our band," added Rival.

Meanwhile, the guitarist, Tege, explained that they didn't actually disagree with the name change. However, they questioned the seriousness of the late Steven Kaligis in changing the band's name that had made their name famous.

"It's not that we don't agree, but more like, 'are you serious?' The branding of this name is already so strong. He said 'sure' so we agreed to start from scratch. We launched it and we also asked the community how changing the name would benefit them. Whatever the name, they still support us," Tege concluded.
