Zaskia Adya Mecca Provides an Update on Conditions Ahead of the Long March from Cairo to Rafah, Intercepted by Dozens of Police and Intelligence in Front of the Hotel

Zaskia Adya Mecca shared a harrowing experience while participating in the Global March to Gaza that took place on June 15, 2025. This action is a form of global solidarity with the Palestinian people and is planned to cover a distance of 50 kilometers on foot from Cairo to the Rafah Gate.

However, their participation faced heavy challenges since arriving in Cairo. They experienced pressure from Egyptian security forces, ranging from tight surveillance to threats of arrest. This situation forced them to devise survival strategies to continue their humanitarian mission.

This action carries high risks due to its status, which has not yet received full official approval from the Egyptian government. 1. Joining Through the Malaysian Contingent, Even Without the Name of Indonesia

Zaskia recounted that she and her group could not officially join as the Indonesian delegation because the registration for Indonesian representatives had closed. They ultimately joined through the Malaysian contingent route to still participate in the long march.

Although they did not carry the name of Indonesia directly, their participation still held significant meaning. They were ready to take risks because they viewed this action as part of a global effort to voice justice for Palestine.

2. Zaskia Witnesses Other Participants Being Deported

Upon arriving in Cairo, the situation felt immediately different from what was imagined. At the airport, Zaskia saw participants from other countries, especially from Europe, experiencing deportation and even detention by local authorities.

Although Zaskia's group managed to pass through immigration smoothly, tension was still palpable. Upon arriving at the hotel, police began recording their passports and speaking seriously with the hotel staff, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere from the very beginning of their arrival.

The next day, the committee announced that negotiations with the Egyptian government did not reach an agreement. As a result, all participants in the action were considered illegal, and the police had the right to arrest anyone who continued to participate.

Around 7:00 AM, three police cars arrived at the hotel and conducted a sweep. Four foreign participants were taken away in a police car, while Zaskia and her group were under pressure, surrounded by about 20 police officers, intelligence agents, and detention vehicles on standby in front of their bus.

4. Moving to a Five-Star Hotel for More Freedom

Seeing the conditions that made movement impossible, they decided to move to a five-star hotel. The hope was that the security level of the hotel could limit the movements of the authorities and prevent open arrests like those experienced by other participants.

However, their assumptions were wrong. The intelligence agents continued to follow openly, and even the entire hotel staff was summoned by the police to receive specific instructions. This made the atmosphere of the hotel uncomfortable, with suspicious glances from the staff towards the group.

5. Pretending to Be Tourists by Taking a Boat on the Nile River

To avoid raising further suspicion, Zaskia and her group decided to act like ordinary tourists. They rented a tourist boat that sailed on the Nile River, which was right in front of the hotel where they were staying.

However, their expressions could not hide their inner turmoil. Instead of appearing as cheerful tourists, they looked troubled and under pressure. During the trip, they tried to build confidence and calmness, even though the situation was not in their favor.
