Kevin Cordon is a badminton player from Guatemala who was defeated by Indonesian athlete Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the bronze medal match of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday night (2/8/2021). Despite failing to bring the bronze medal for his country, Kevin's struggle successfully won the sympathy of the Indonesian people. His story as a badminton player is extraordinary!
Kevin Cordon is Guatemala's pride athlete who has dreamed of playing in the Olympics since he was a child. Therefore, he chose badminton.
Kevin, who was born on November 28, 1986, comes from the small town of La Union, Zacapa, Guatemala. He started seriously training in badminton at the age of 11.
Kevin finally realized his dream of performing at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 after winning a silver medal at the Pan America event and being chosen as the flag bearer during the opening ceremony.
Although he struggled to participate in international tournaments due to lack of sponsors, Kevin represented Guatemala at the 2012 and 2020 Olympics. In 2016, he actually qualified but withdrew due to injury.
One of Kevin Cordon's coaches is Muamaf Qadafi, a former badminton player and PBSI staff from Indonesia. He also helped Kevin make history for Guatemala at the Olympics.
Kevin became the first badminton player from Central America to reach the Olympic semifinals. The Guatemalan public is very proud of his achievement.
Not only Guatemala, but the Indonesian public also sympathizes and appreciates Kevin Cordon's struggle. Especially when he smiled while congratulating Ginting. The Guatemalan public also thanks Indonesia for their support for Kevin Cordon.
