Marrying a Commoner, Princess Ayako Still Carries Out Traditions

Princess Ayako finally married her lover, Kei Moriya, after their wedding was postponed. This noblewoman and commoner couple were supposed to be married in August. Now they are officially married at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo on October 30th.

The place where they got married is an important historical building in Japan. The wedding was still carried out within the noble society. Although Ayako herself has given up her status for her lover.

Ayako and Moriya's love story has been open to the public since their engagement. As known, Moriya is not from the noble class.

He is a private employee of an expedition company in Japan. Both of them understand well that this marriage will make Ayako lose her title and aristocratic facilities.

The party was held privately and attended only by the Japanese Royal family. Several traditional processions were also held for Ayako and Moriya's wedding.

Although she has to leave her life as a noble princess, Ayako looks happy. "I am full of happiness," said Ayako as quoted from Vogue after her wedding procession.

Princess Ayako wore two dresses for her wedding ceremony. First, she wore a pale yellow kimono. This is for the sake drinking ceremony as a tribute to the Tamagushi tree. This ceremony symbolizes belief in the gods.

The second outfit is a bright red floral kimono made of silk. Both outfits worn by Princess Ayako are the traditional clothing of nobles since the Heian period, which was from 794 to 1185.

Both outfits were introduced by Ayako's mother, Princess Hisako. Ayako herself is now 27 years old, she studied in Canada while her future husband is a graduate of the University of Tokyo.
