Not only does it offer modern terror, this film also delves into the dark history behind the existence of the route. The Alas Roban route was first opened in 1602 by Ki Bahurekso, a trusted figure of Sultan Agung Mataram, in preparation for an attack against the VOC.
This route was later reinforced by Daendels when building the Great Post Road (Pantura) between 1808 and 1811. The project involved a forced labor system (rodi), which caused many casualties. The community believes that the spirits of the workers who died still inhabit the area to this day, and this mystical aura is strongly conveyed in the film's narrative.
