KUPU-KUPU KERTAS highlights one of the dark histories in Indonesia, namely the story of a bloody conflict that occurred in 1965 in Banyuwangi, where 62 youths from the Ansor Youth Movement were massacred by the PKI. The Ansor Youth Movement then retaliated with an operation called Gagak Hitam, which resulted in even more casualties that could not be avoided. This event is commemorated in a monument known as Lubang Buaya Cemetuk.

Although there were shooting obstacles because on September 13th, Kawah Wurung, the shooting location, experienced a fire, fortunately, the entire crew and cast managed to save themselves.
