Synopsis of 'IMPERFECT', Rara's Story Facing Insecurity

Kapanlagi.com - The issue of body-shaming or mocking someone's body shape and the prevalence of self-love campaigns on social media has inspired Ernest Prakasa and Meira Anastasia to create a film. Wrapped in Ernest's signature comedy, the film IMPERFECT is adapted from a book written by his wife, Meira, titled IMPERFECT: A JOURNEY TO SELF ACCEPTANCE. The film version is then titled IMPERFECT: CAREER, LOVE, & WEIGHT.

This film tells the story of a woman named Rara (Jessica Milla) who doesn't care about her body appearance. Since she was a child, Rara has been accustomed to being mocked. Having a mother named Debby (Karina Suwandi), a former model whose appearance is admired, and her sister Lulu (Yasmin Napper) who is beautiful, tall, fair-skinned, and slim like the current beauty standards, makes Rara, who is chubby and has a tan complexion, constantly compared to her family.

However, her indifference disappears when Rara's boss (Dion Wiyoko) offers her a higher position in the office.

1. A Dilemma

Rara's boss offers her a higher position with one condition. He asks Rara to change her appearance to match the company's profile, which is in the cosmetics industry. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and Rara, who previously didn't care about her appearance, starts dieting and taking care of herself to achieve a model-like appearance.

This is supported by her friends and her boyfriend Dika (Reza Rahadian), who is attracted to Rara because of her kindness and sincerity. Rara takes various ways to achieve the standard of beauty of women today. Friends and her boyfriend also help Rara to achieve this goal.

2. The Importance of Self-Love

When Rara becomes the beautiful woman she dreams of, she becomes arrogant. Rara, who Dika knows as a good and sincere woman, disappears. The Rara who used to be the subject of ridicule now becomes the one who mocks appearances. Slowly, Rara's friends disappear from her life. Realizing this, Rara introspects herself and corrects her mistakes.

This umpteenth film by Ernest Prakasa successfully turns a sensitive issue into a light yet meaningful film. Interwoven with easily understandable comedy, this film successfully teaches its audience to always be grateful for the appearance given by God.

Screened on December 19, 2019 in theaters, now IMPERFECT can be enjoyed again through the Netflix platform.
