This film marks Jeremias' directorial debut. Before directing this film, Jeremias was known as a producer, actor, and film writer. Some films he has written include Denias, Senandung di ATAS AWAN (2006) and SERDADU KUMBANG (2011).

This film is based on real incidents of sexual violence victims in Rote, NTT. In addition, the film addresses women's issues. It portrays discrimination and centuries-old traditions that make women a second-class gender in society.

The film WOMEN FROM ROTE ISLAND tells the story of a mother's bitter experience along with her three children. Orpa carries the status of a single parent after the death of her husband and raises her three children alone, facing various problems such as discrimination as a widow, the stigma in Rote Island society that women occupy a secondary gender, and even sexual violence.

Not only Orpa, her daughter named Martha also becomes a victim of sexual violence while working abroad. Working as an illegal Indonesian migrant worker in Sabah, Malaysia, she did not receive any payment for two years of working in a palm oil plantation.

Martha's return brings happiness to Orpa and her two siblings, but she carries the pain of experiencing trauma as a victim of sexual violence. In fact, she suffers from depression after the rape tragedy that happened to her.

The cast of this film consists of local actors from NTT. Local actors were deliberately chosen to preserve the regional accent of Rote and to obtain the uniqueness of the region.
