GLADIATOR is a 2000 adventure drama film produced by Douglas Wick, Branko Lustig, and David Franzoni, and directed by Ridley Scott. With a story written by David Franzoni and a screenplay by John Logan, William Nicholson, and David Franzoni. In the first sequel, the film stars Russel Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, Richard Harris, and Djimon Hounsou. It premiered on May 1, 2000 in Los Angeles and was released on May 5, 2000 in the United States.
The first sequel grossed $400 million or equivalent to 6.2 trillion Indonesian Rupiah, and received 11 Oscar nominations, winning the Best Picture and Best Actor awards for Russel Crowe.
Reportedly, GLADIATOR 2 will focus more on the story of Lucius, a son of Lucilla played by Connie Nielsen in the first film. Lucius is also known as the nephew of Commodus played by Joaquin Phoenix, and the leader of Rome who dies at the hands of Maximus.
Long-awaited, Ridley Scott is finally preparing the second sequel to GLADIATOR, with Paul Mescal as the main cast. Parkes has also confirmed that this sequel will take place 25 years after the first GLADIATOR. Associated with Russel Crowe, it is highly likely that he will not appear in the second sequel. His role as Maximus will only be used as motivation for Lucius.
Currently in the works, the film GLADIATOR 2 has set a release date for November 22, 2024. As reported by MovieWeb on February 4, 2023, the film has been developed with the first draft of the script submitted last November. Since then, Ridley Scott has been searching for the actor who will be suitable to lead the film.
Then the name Paul Mescal emerged as Ridley Scott's top choice. Paul Mescal will play the adult Lucius. The actor Paul Mescal is not unfamiliar. Previously, he was nominated for an Emmy and starred in the series NORMAL PEOPLE and appeared in major films such as GOD'S CREATURES which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. With a string of achievements and experience, it's no wonder Ridley Scott chose Paul Mescal to star in his film.
In addition, there will be other famous actors such as Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal whose roles are yet to be known, as well as up-and-coming actors like Fred Hechinger as Emperor Geta, Derek Jacobi as Gracchus, and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla. Some actors from the first film will also reprise their roles, such as Connie Nielsen who will play Lucilla.

Russel Crowe has been receiving many questions about GLADIATOR 2. Because of this, he believes that he deserves to be paid for answering the questions about the continuation of the successful film released in 2000.
"They should pay me for the number of questions that come to me about a film that I'm not even in, I don't know anything about the cast or the plot," Crowe said at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Russel Crowe is no longer involved because in the end of the first film, his character dies 3 meters underground. Nevertheless, Ridley Scott's decision to continue the story of GLADIATOR has been going on for over 2 decades, which surely has strong reasons behind it.
GLADIATOR 2 was conceived after the success of its first film two decades ago. However, due to funding difficulties for production and other issues, Paramount Pictures only gave the green light in 2018. Meanwhile, in 2021, Ridley Scott stated that there would be a revamp and rewriting of the script.
