For Marvel Fans, You Must Know These 5 Things About 'MORBIUS' Starring Jared Leto

It seems fair for fans to assume that this film is made in the Spider-Man Universe. This collaboration film between Sony and Marvel is indeed building films that have the same energy and world as VENOM. If we look at what Marvel has been doing lately with SPIDER-MAN colliding with Sam Raimi and VENOM colliding with SPIDER-MAN version Tom Holland, there is a possibility that we will see unexpected collaborations in the future.

Although there are still no signs of Spider-Man, we can see the presence of Michael Keaton who previously played Vulture. So for those of you who still don't know anything about MORBIUS, here are 5 things you must know before its release next year.

1. Morbius Release Date

MORBIUS was originally scheduled to be released on July 31, 2020 in the United Kingdom and the United States, but eventually the film was one of many that were postponed due to the pandemic. This film has been postponed five times, with initial schedules in March and October 2021, MORBIUS is now set to be released on January 28, 2022. This means the film will be released eighteen months after its original release date, and a full two years after the first trailer was released in January 2020. Hopefully it will not be postponed again.

This film began shooting in the United Kingdom in late February 2019. Interestingly, MORBIUS, which has been moved to 2022, will be part of the major deal between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Netflix signed in April 2021. This deal gives Netflix exclusive streaming rights to Sony films in 2022 and beyond after their theatrical release. This means MORBIUS, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2, UNCHARTED, and many more can be watched on Netflix after their theatrical release. However, this is still unclear as it is a specific deal in the US.

2. Plot Morbius

This film will tell the story of Michael Morbius as he tries to fight a rare blood condition, he takes a step further by experimenting with bat DNA in an attempt to cure himself, ultimately this experiment transforms him into a vampire.

Leto tells about the character in an interview with Variety's Actor on Actors, "I was interested in this role because he goes from death to finding a cure for this disease and becomes very healthy, and then undergoes such a drastic change that he becomes terrifying," he said. "So, it's a bit like Jekyll and Hyde, which is certainly a classic role."

3. Morbius Cast

Regarding the cast, Jared Leto will play the main character MORBIUS, who was created in 1971 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. This character actually started as a villain in the comics before eventually becoming an anti-hero.

In addition to Leto, there is also Matt Smith who will join him in MORBIUS, playing Loxias Crow, a film villain and friend of Morbius who suffers from the same blood disease. There are also Jared Harris, Adria Arjona, and Tyrese Gibson.

Gibson will portray the character Simon Stroud and will use a high-tech mechanical arm in the film. He reportedly signed a three-picture deal when he joined the film.

As for the presence of Tom Hardy in this film, it is still uncertain as Hardy has not been seen in the trailer. However, director Daniel Espinosa revealed that Hardy will also be in this Marvel film after accidentally mentioning it in an interview with MovieZine.

4. Presence of Michael Keaton

In the first trailer for the film MORBIUS, Sony features Vulture played by Michael Keaton. MORBIUS is actually the same as VENOM version by Tom Hardy which is a spin-off from SPIDER-MAN. However, the presence of Michael Keaton changes everything. Since Keaton previously played a villain in Disney's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.

The last scene of Vulture in the MCU is a mid-credits scene in SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING, where he is serving his sentence in prison. He contacts Mac Gargan, who eventually becomes Scorpion in the comics. He asks Toomes about Spider-Man's true identity, which is surprisingly denied by Vulture, as he denies that Peter Parker is his son's friend at school.

The presence of Keaton is not the only reference to SPIDER-MAN. A newspaper displayed in the trailer refers to the villains Rhino and Black Cat, who both appeared in The AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.

Even more confusing, the word 'killer' is seen crossed out on the poster of Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire. We have to see the movie to know if this is just a regular easter egg or if a multiverse connecting multiple universes will occur. Sony has indeed been working hard on its superhero genre, with MORBIUS, a sequel to VENOM, and a secret project by Olivia Wilde rumored to be working on a SPIDER-WOMAN film.
