Carnage and Cletus first appeared in the comic THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN issue 344 in 1991, and Carnage started appearing as a villain in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN issue 361 in 1992.
Carnage is the host of a ruthless killer named Cletus Kasady. Carnage is a classic villain presented by Marvel, different from Venom who is often portrayed as an anti-hero.
Cletus meets his host, the red symbiote, when he is incarcerated in Ryker's Island prison for committing 11 murders. And coincidentally, he is in the same prison as Venom and Eddie Brock. That's where Venom leaves the split symbiote and eventually merges with Cletus.
Although Carnage is a creature created from Venom, it's not just the color that is different. It turns out that the bond between Carnage and Cletus is stronger than that of Venom and Eddie. Since Cletus is a very cruel person, Carnage ultimately becomes more ruthless, stronger, and deadlier than Venom.
