MovieTalk TRANSFORMERS RISE OF THE BEASTS, Maximal Animal Robots that Lay the Foundation for the Franchise's Future

TRANSFORMERS RISE OF THE BEASTS introduces the Maximals, robots with animal forms. If in the previous six films, the audience was amazed by cool vehicles that transformed into sophisticated robots, this time they will see something fresh and different.

The Maximals that appear in this film are Optimus Primal (voiced by Ron Perlman), Airazor (Michelle Yeoh), Cheetor (Tongayi Chirisa), and Rhinox (David Sobolov). All four take on the form of animals that we commonly see, such as gorillas, eagles, cheetahs, and rhinos. However, what sets them apart is their giant size and their bionic appearance with visible machine parts.

The appearance of animal-shaped robots is not the first time it has happened in the TRANSFORMERS franchise. In AGE OF EXTINCTION, for example, the audience will see metallic dinosaur-shaped robots, or in DARK OF THE MOON, there is one deception that takes the form of a scavenger bird.

However, more than just appearing or being supporting actors, the Maximals in this film have an important role as the driving force of the story. Even more than that, Maximals also become an important foundation for the future of the Transformers franchise, which has generated IDR 22,071 trillion (with a rounding of the exchange rate of IDR 14 thousand).

Steven Caple Jr. (director) also has a personal interest in BEAST WARS. This is what makes the producers confident that bringing Maximals into the film is the right step. "I watched three seasons of the series."

At first, it was strange to see a Transformers series without Optimus in the form of a truck and the animation was new at that time. But as time went on, the storyline became more interesting. There were many surprises and touching moments," Steven said.

Here are some of the reasons we have summarized from various sources and discussions with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (producer), Steven Caple Jr (director), and Anthony Ramos & Dominique Fishback (cast) via zoom some time ago.

The Maximals were first introduced in the 1996 animated series BEAST WARS: TRANSFORMERS. The series was appreciated by fans as a refreshing and unique development of the existing franchise.

This spirit was then brought back in RISE OF THE BEASTS. The presence of the Maximals is expected to bring a refreshing element to the franchise, which has already produced 6 films. However, it is not an easy task to bring the Maximals into the TRANSFORMERS film, which is already known for its stunning visuals. "One of our long debates was how to bring giant robot animals to Earth in a way that makes sense," said Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

For example, in portraying Airazor in the form of an eagle, director Steven and Lorenzo made sure that the visuals looked both robotic and organic. "Each feather must appear to move dynamically, not stiff. However, the movement must also not be arbitrary because the feathers are made of metal," they said.

Far from just entertaining fans and new viewers, the presence of the Maximals also expands the scope of the TRANSFORMERS film story. "It's not just about Earth, but you will see that there are many robots out there, there are many new groups. There are many stories to explore," said Steven optimistically.

Compared to their appearance in 1996, the Maximals in RISE OF THE BEASTS are truly maximal. Just look at Cheetor, who is detailed from both robotic and organic perspectives. Every fur on Cheetor's body feels real. "He's also cool, both in action and speech," says Anthony, who idolizes Cheetor.

One of the interesting plot points presented here is the meeting of two Autobot and Maximal leaders. Both are equally charming and firm. What will their meeting be like?

Audiences will be presented with the early days of the Autobots on Earth. Because RISE OF THE BEASTS is a direct sequel to BUMBLEBEE. Here, Optimus can be said to still be young and searching for his identity.

There will be many new robot characters that have never appeared in previous films. "Guaranteed to make fans happy," says Steven. On the opposing side, there is Scourge, a robot rumored to be as powerful and skilled in combat as Optimus Prime. When transformed, he also has a truck form that resembles Optimus.

One thing that is always anticipated in TRANSFORMERS films is the action of the robots. Audiences will be able to witness the tandem action between Archee and Wheeljack. Especially if you watch in IMAX version.

The setting may be in the 90s, but the visual effects presented are truly eye-catching. The car chase scene between Mirage and Noah, called by Steven and Anthony as one of the scenes with complex preparation.

A little spoiler for you, Mirage will be in the spotlight in this film, her role will be as crucial as Bumblebee in the previous films. You can also see this from the trailers that have been released.

Wait for our next article to discuss more about Noah (Anthony Ramos) and Elena (Dominique Fishback) who are the two central characters from the human side.
