TURNING RED is available on Disney+ starting March 11, 2022. This latest Pixar film presents the story of Mei-Mei, a Chinese-Canadian teenage girl from Toronto, Canada, who embraces her puberty in an unusual way. She suddenly transforms into a big red panda.
First, let's get to know Mei-Mei. She is a smart, diligent, active middle school student with high self-confidence. She and her gang can be considered activists in their school.
Mei-Mei's days revolve around school and family. She, along with her mother and father, manages a family heritage temple as a place of worship and cultural tourism.Director Domee Shi previously explored the story of a Chinese family in America through the short film BAO.
How surprised Mei was when she woke up in the morning with her body transformed into a big red panda. Panic engulfed her.
Mei didn't want anyone to know about this transformation. Besides trying to find out the cause, she didn't want her Mom and Dad to know.
In her panic, Mei, in her panda form, ran around the city, even leaping onto residential buildings.
TURNING RED presents friendship from diverse backgrounds. Many sources say that this film is like the director's autobiography.
Friendship means everything to a teenager. This is well portrayed in the relationship between Mei and her three friends.
Mei then discovers the fact that she turns into a panda when her emotions fluctuate or when she expresses her emotions.It is undeniable that Mei's transformation is a metaphor for puberty, cleverly and uniquely packaged.
When Mei can control her emotions, she transforms back into a human form. However, her hair has now turned red.
Although she still has to deal with the mystery of her transformation, Mei apparently has a desire to watch the concert of 4*TOWN, a popular boyband.
The presence of this boyband is very relevant to the current pop culture of Generation Z who are fans of fangirling. Domee Shi, the director, admitted to being inspired by 2PM and BigBang in designing these characters.
Mei-Mei, who is a fan of 4*TOWN, beautifully portrays the phenomenon of fangirling that is currently rampant among young people.
