A number of experts and historians will contribute to the making of this documentary series. Among them are (American archaeologist) Dr. Chris Davis, (Brazilian paleontologist) Dr. Alceu Ranzi, and (archaeobotanist) Dr. Sonia Cardinali from Rapa Nui, Easter Island.
This documentary series consists of six episodes, each with a duration of about 40 minutes. First released in 2022, ANCIENT APOCALYPSE has sparked various controversies. In its first season, the Society for American Archaeology even issued an open letter to Bela Bajaria, head of content at Netflix, and Rachel Corp, CEO of ITN Productions, accusing the documentary of belittling archaeologists and degrading the profession of archaeology with inaccurate claims and misinformation.
For the second season, The Guardian reported that indigenous groups in Arizona raised concerns about the filming process conducted in their territory. Nevertheless, ITN stated that the decision regarding filming locations was made by the team based on editorial considerations. The documentary ANCIENT APOCALYPSE: THE AMERICAS is scheduled to premiere on October 16, 2024, on Netflix.
