But who would have thought that the Land of Ginseng also has some incredibly creepy and rarely exposed places, such as the long-abandoned Gonjiam Hospital. For horror movie enthusiasts, you must have watched the movie 'GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM' released in 2018. It is set in an abandoned haunted hospital.
Gonjiam is located on a hill in Gwangju City, Gyonggi-do Province. This hospital specializes in handling mental health issues. Its nickname is Psychiatric Hospital.
Established since the 1950s, this hospital accommodates patients with mental illnesses as well as soldiers experiencing depression. Its reputation back then was considered good.
At some point, Gonjiam suddenly stopped operating. The building was left abandoned without anyone taking care of it for years.
From there, rumors started to emerge about the haunted and eerie nature of this hospital. One of them is the rumor about the suicide of the hospital's director.
Apparently, the gossip was just a hoax. In a TV show on Channel A back in 2007, a shocking fact was revealed that the director is still alive.
The reason the hospital stopped is because it was subjected to government regulations regarding 'water supply protection', so the government required the hospital to build a waste processor. However, there was a dispute between the building owner and the hospital director regarding the cost of construction.
Anyway, the more it is rumored to be haunted, the more curious people are to enter and prove its truth.
Various writings were found inside Gonjiam Mental Hospital, but it is unknown whether they were written by previous patients or mischievous visitors.
Even on one of its walls, there is a large red handprint like blood. Again, it is unknown whether this is just the work of pranksters or if it has been there since ancient times.
There is actually a prohibition to enter Gonjiam after it was closed. However, many people sneak in illegally.
The viral film 'GONJIAN: HAUNTED ASYLUM' has made this location even more crowded with visitors.
It is not uncommon for YouTubers to try to enter for horror content. This has caused concern among the surrounding residents.
Due to the many naughty visitors and the rampant ghost rumors, R.S Gonjiam was eventually demolished and reportedly relocated elsewhere.
