Unlike other members of Gfriend who have been trainees in other agencies before, Umji only underwent one year of training at Source Music Entertainment. She entered the agency after the CEO of Source Music met her and asked her to audition to become a member of Gfriend. Since she had never been a trainee before, Umji is the only member of Gfriend who debuted without any prior experience in the K-Pop industry.

2. Daughter of One of the Wealthiest Dentists in Korea

Umji is the youngest child of Kim Sang Bong. Kim Sang Bong is known as the owner of a dental clinic network with 43 offices. This makes him one of the wealthiest dentists in South Korea. Despite being the child of a wealthy dentist, Umji is not arrogant, but rather a kind and humble member of Gfriend. In fact, before their debut, she treated all the members of Gfriend to a meal!

3. Once Sang Together with Her Brother on TV

Umji has an older brother named Kim Bogeun. He is Umji's eldest brother who currently serves as a sergeant in the South Korean Navy. They once appeared and sang together on the SINGER FAMILY SINGING CONTEST on February 9, 2016. After their performance, Umji's brother received many praises for his good voice and appearance, as well as having good chemistry with his younger sister.

4. Being Gfriend's Maknae and in Her Family
