The name Coachella is certainly familiar to international music fans. This music event is one of the prestigious music festivals hosted in the United States, specifically in California.
At this event, a number of artists from various parts of the world are invited to perform on this grand stage, including those from the Korean music scene.
Several K-pop groups have successfully performed at Coachella with outstanding performances that have impressed the audience. The first K-pop artist to step onto the Coachella stage was EPIK HIGH in 2016, followed by other K-pop groups. Curious about who these K-pop idols are? Let's check out the list below!
Emerging in 2019, BLACKPINK successfully enlivened the prestigious international music stage Coachella at the Sahara stage. The performance delivered by BLACKPINK was considered mesmerizing with stage presence and vocals that captured the public's attention.
Even BLACKPINK's stage performance at Coachella is said to be one of the best among all K-pop artists who have ever performed on that festival stage.
BLACKPINK itself became the first K-pop artist to attend the music event more than once; in 2019 and 2023. This is due to the popularity effect gained from their first performance at Coachella.
Performing songs Kill This Love to DDU-DU DDU-DU, BLACKPINK managed to shake up the Coachella stage and attract a lot of attention from netizens.
Last year, specifically in 2022, 2NE1 attended the Coachella event and performed their hit song I AM THE BEST. Although initially the only artist announced to attend this event was CL, the woman born in 1991 invited the other three members to perform together on stage again at Coachella.
In addition, one of the members, CL, also performed solo at the beginning of the show and sang the songs Hello Bitches, SPICY, and Chuck, successfully igniting the enthusiasm of the audience.
In addition to K-pop groups, the Korean hip hop group EPIK HIGH was also invited to perform at Coachella. Performing songs like Fly, Here, and BORN HATER, netizens, especially from Korea, felt proud because EPIK HIGH successfully engaged the audience with their great performance.
This group became the first K-pop group to step onto the Coachella stage and received positive attention for Korean music.
Just recently performing on the Coachella stage a few days ago, Le Sserafim successfully delivered 10 songs including their latest unreleased track, 1-800-HOT & FUN.
However, unfortunately, the public's response to Le Sserafim's performance on stage was less than positive. This was due to several factors such as their vocals being considered unstable and not melodious while performing their songs with choreography. Netizens stated that an idol should already have a sufficient vocal foundation.
Nonetheless, some fans defended that their idol was dancing with challenging choreography that is difficult to maintain with stable vocals. In fact, according to audience members who witnessed Le Sserafim's stage performance live, they were acknowledged to be captivating due to their charisma on stage.
Another K-pop group that successfully represented Korea to perform on the Coachella stage recently is ATEEZ. They received a lot of praise for their phenomenal performance.
Specifically, ATEEZ performed 10 songs, and their voices while singing, even while executing difficult choreography, showed that ATEEZ could control their vocals. This became a point of comparison among netizens between ATEEZ's stage and Le Sserafim, which were considered vastly different.
Moreover, this was their first time performing on an international prestigious stage since their debut 6 years ago.
Coming from the K-pop group under SM Entertainment, aespa also successfully performed on the Coachella stage in 2022, presenting several songs such as Black Mamba to Next Level.
Aespa received criticism from netizens for having less impactful charisma. However, this was compensated by their live vocal performance, which was deemed very stable even while they were singing and dancing. Ultimately, many netizens expressed their admiration for the group consisting of four members.
The singer of the song BAM YANG GANG also participated in the prestigious Coachella stage last year, you know. Performing the songs BAM YANG GANG, Sugar Rush, and Feeling Lucky, BIBI effortlessly captured the hearts of the audience both at the venue and at home with her charisma on stage and her amazing vocal voice.
In addition, BIBI also surprised the audience with the appearance of Jackson Wang ex-GOT7 on stage singing the song Feeling Lucky together. Netizens were left in awe because their chemistry on stage was deemed very funny.
