Controversial Flood Instagram Account Ji Chang Wook Character Cosplay Jang Ryong

Unfortunately, not all of it is positive praise, because BACKSTREET ROOKIE, his latest drama currently airing on SBS, is filled with negative criticism from KDrama fans.

After the first episode, which was heavily protested by Korean netizens for featuring a kissing scene between a high school student and an adult, the latest controversy surrounding this drama is that it is considered racist for portraying black skin stereotypes through one of its characters, Dalshik, played by Eum Moonsuk.

Apparently, this racist issue doesn't stop there. Ji Chang Wook's latest video post cosplaying as the character Jang Ryong alongside Eum Moonsuk also received harsh criticism from international fans!

For those who don't know, Jang Ryong is a mafia character with Dora hair played by Eum Moonsuk in the drama THE FIERY PRIEST which aired on SBS in 2019. This drama is directed by PD Lee Myeongwoo, who is also working on BACKSTREET ROOKIE.

So, what is Ji Chang Wook's controversial post that has invited netizens' criticism?

1. Wearing Dora's Hair and Performing Capoeira

In a short video posted by Ji Chang Wook on his personal Instagram account, he can be seen wearing a wig like Jang Ryong while still wearing a 24-hour supermarket uniform from BACKSTREET ROOKIE. Together with Eum Moonsuk, who is still wearing a costume like Dalshik, Eum Moonsuk is seen demonstrating the typical capoeira movements often performed by Jang Ryong in THE FIERY PRIEST.

Ji Chang Wook tries to imitate the body movements performed by Eum Moonsuk and succeeds. He immediately receives applause from the drama crew who witnessed the Jang Ryong cosplay.

2. Considered Racist by International Fans

Two Jang Ryong cosplay videos uploaded by Ji Chang Wook on his personal Instagram account were immediately flooded with harsh comments from international fans. Many fans feel disappointed and no longer respect Ji Chang Wook, whom they consider racist.

These videos are considered racist because they are deemed to insult a certain race through the dreadlocks hairstyle worn by Eum Moonsuk. Many are disappointed with Ji Chang Wook for being insensitive to the Black Lives Matter issue. Moreover, this moment coincides with the controversy surrounding the BACKSTREET ROOKIE episode, which is considered to contain black skin stereotypes.
