Members Reveal the Origin of the Name BLACKPINK, Turns Out It's Not According to the Initial Plan

However, it turns out that the group consisting of Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo, and Rose revealed that they initially planned to use a different name.

The discussion about this name was brought up during BLACKPINK's interview with Access, where they discussed their first full album, THE ALBUM, recently. Despite the change from the initial plan, the decision to name it BLACKPINK happened spontaneously.

1. Initially Confused

During the interview, the members were asked how they came up with the name "BLACKPINK". Answering this question, Jennie revealed that initially they wanted to find a word that combines the words "black" and "pink".

"We were initially confused in choosing a group name. If there is a combination of black and pink, like in the right amount, then we will choose that color," said Jennie, as quoted from Koreaboo.

2. Finally Stuck

However, they couldn't find the right word that combines "black" and "pink". Therefore, they decided to merge them into one word.

"We just put them (the words "black" and "pink") together and created one word from both," added Rose.

3. Meaning of Name

The name that combines these two contrasting colors reflects the overall BLACKPINK group. Like black and pink, Jennie said how they want their group name to show the diversity of BLACKPINK.

"We want to express the diversity of the group and how far and varied the genres we can do and show to you," Jennie concluded.
