Not Many Know, These Films Tell the Story of World War II from the Perspective of Japan

We have surely seen many films about World War II. However, most of the films we see are from the perspective of the allies, especially America. So, what about the story from the perspective of the axis bloc?

Here are a series of films that are based on one of the countries included in the axis bloc, Japan. Not only discussing the soldiers who fought, the role of spies that is essential in this great war is also told!

1. ISOROKU (2011)

ISOROKU is a film that tells the story of Isoroku Yamamoto, the commander of the Japanese Navy in World War II. He is famous for planning the attack on Pearl Harbor. However, he opposes Japan's decision to fight against America because it would bring great disaster to his country.

This film tells the story of Yamamoto (played by Kouji Yakusho) as he plans for Pearl Harbor and his opposition to the Japanese authorities. It also discusses his personal life with his loved ones, such as his family.

2. OBA, THE LAST SAMURAI (2011)

This film is based on the true story of Captain Sakae Oba, an officer of the Japanese Army during World War II. OBA, THE LAST SAMURAI tells the story of a group of Japanese soldiers led by Captain Sakae Oba (played by Yutaka Takenobuchi) who have to fight against American forces on Saipan Island during WWII.

At that time, America had a much larger number of soldiers compared to the Japanese. However, Sakae Oba's war strategy proves to be effective in overwhelming the American troops. The captain's impressive escape and resistance against the American soldiers become the main focus of this story.

3. THE ETERNAL ZERO (2013)

THE ETERNAL ZERO opens with the story of a grandson named Kentaro Saeki (played by Haruma Miura) who learns that his deceased grandfather was involved in World War II. Wanting to know more about his grandfather's story, Kentaro eventually asks several war veterans.

It is told that his grandfather, named Kyuzo Miyabe (played by Junichi Okada), was the most cowardly soldier. He preferred to go home and avoid the war rather than volunteer for the famous Japanese suicide mission, Kamikaze. Kyuzo was willing to pay any amount to return home. However, if Kyuzo always wanted to go home, why did he volunteer for the suicide mission?

4. JOKER GAME (2015)

World War II is not just about physical battles. Things like obtaining or stealing information from enemy countries and risking lives done by spies are also very important. However, from the perspective of this film, espionage is considered a cowardly act, causing conflicts between the military and spies.

JOKER GAME tells the story of a spy named Jiro Kato (played by Kazuya Kamenashi) who is assigned to retrieve a secret document called the Black Note owned by America. Kato is sent to an international city and must obtain the document that is being fought over by himself, a mysterious woman, radical Japanese soldiers, British spies, and Soviet spies.

5. WIFE OF A SPY (2020)

WIFE OF A SPY tells the story of a woman named Satoko Fukuhara (played by Yu Aoi) who has a husband named Yusaku Fukuhara (played by Issey Takahashi). As far as she knows, her husband is just an ordinary person running a business by collaborating with people from various countries.

However, one day, an incident leads the Japanese military to suspect Yusaku as a spy betraying the country. After Yusaku tells and shows his discovery to Satoko, Satoko says that she will always be on his side no matter what happens. She will continue to support her husband even though he has been accused of being a traitor to the country.
