[Review] LOW LIFE Drama, Feels Like Being Invited to Search for Underwater Treasure in the Old Days

The latest Korean drama titled LOW LIFE is currently airing exclusively on the Disney+ platform and has successfully captured the audience's attention with its strong retro vibe and touching story. This drama is star-studded with performances from Ryu Seung Ryong, Yang Se Jong, Im Soo Jung, Lee Dong Hwi, and Yunho TVXQ, who all shine in their respective roles.

LOW LIFE is set in 1977, when rumors spread about a Qing Dynasty Chinese shipwreck containing treasure off the coast of Korea. The main characters, Oh Gwang-seok (Ryu Seung Ryong) and his nephew Oh Hee-dong (Yang Se Jong), two hardworking but underprivileged village men, are tempted to join the search for the buried treasure. With a guarantee for the purchase of the items they dig up by Chairman Chun, they embark on an adventure with 'chosen' individuals.

For those who haven't watched and are interested, let's check the review from KapanLagi.com first before watching the drama!

What makes you fall in love since the first episode is the 70s atmosphere that is depicted so vividly. From the street setting, the color tone of the images, to the costumes of the actors, everything feels authentic and truly immerses us in the past.

Moreover, the strong Mokpo accent adds extra value, especially when spoken by Yunho from TVXQ. This detail makes the character feel more alive and its locality feels strong.

Every end of the episode is also crafted with enticing cliffhangers. It always feels like there’s a surprise or conflict that piques curiosity and makes you want to immediately continue watching the next episode.

The chemistry between Ryu Seung Ryong and Yang Se Jong as uncle and nephew is also commendable. Their relationship is not always harmonious, but it is from this that interesting emotional dynamics and sometimes funny moments emerge. Their interaction brings life to this multi-layered story.

When it comes to acting, there seems to be no doubt. Ryu Seung Ryong and Im Soo Jung showcase their experience in the Korean acting world.

However, for those of you who are used to fast-paced and action-filled Korean dramas, Low Life may feel a bit slow at the beginning. But this is understandable, as this drama indeed requires time to introduce each character and build their world in depth.

In addition, some of the CGI used still feels a bit rough and looks 'fake'. But overall, the cinematography for other scenes is still excellent.
