SM Entertainment Announces Sungchan and Shotaro Leaving NCT, Will Debut in New Group

Unfortunate news came from SM Entertainment. As of May 24 KST, SM Entertainment announced that two members of NCT, Sungchan and Shotaro will be leaving NCT.

Both of them officially left the boy group that debuted in 2016 after approximately 3 years of being together with NCT. Through a statement issued by the agency, they officially left the group to join a new SM project in the third quarter of this year. 

As reported by Allkpop, SM even plans to add more regional members to the Japanese NCT unit. Furthermore, the agency will announce the creation of a new unit to fans.

As known, both Sungchan and Shotaro were the last members to debut as part of NCT in 2020 with the album NCT 2020 ' Resonance Pt. 1'.  Check out SM Entertainment's statement regarding Sungchan and Shotaro below.

1. SM's Official Statement Regarding Sungchan and Shotaro's Future

SM Entertainment has just announced the fate of Sungchan and Shotaro as part of NCT. From their initial statement, SM conveyed that both are no longer part of NCT.

“This is SM Entertainment. First and foremost, we want to express our sincere gratitude to all the fans who love and support NCT. Below is our announcement informing you of the future plans for SUNGCHAN and SHOTARO,” wrote SM Entertainment on Wednesday, May 24.

However, the departure of Sungchan and Shotaro from NCT is for their debut in a new boy group that has been prepared to debut this year.

“As members of NCT, SUNGCHAN and SHOTARO have presented something extraordinary. However, they will close their chapter with NCT. Appearance and debut in a new boy group that will be launched in 2023 We convey our deepest apologies and appreciation to the fans who have supported and carefully waited for them to debut as part of the new NCT group,” said the agency.

So fans don't need to be sad, because both will still be part of SM Entertainment and will debut in a new group.

2. Asks Fans to Continue Supporting Their Careers

SM Entertainment also asks for support from fans regarding the careers of Sungchan and Shotaro who will debut in a new group. This is related to SM's new project preparations, known as SM 3.0.

“After careful consideration and discussion with SUNGCHAN and SHOTARO in preparation for SM 3.0, we have reached a decision that best reflects the artists' thoughts and each group's artistic and musical direction. We ask for your understanding and support for SUNGCHAN and SHOTARO as they start a new chapter. The latest NCT group will be the last group to be part of NCT's unlimited expansion, so we aim to launch the group with a unique worldview that truly represents regional identity. In line with this, we will increase the number of Japanese members. Introducing new members and sharing their debut journey with fans. We will provide full support not only for NCT members but also for SUNGCHAN and SHOTARO. We ask once again for fans to continue to show unwavering love and support for their future endeavors. Thank you” the agency wrote in its statement.
