SM Entertainment is known as an agency that houses a multitude of multi-talented K-Pop idols with perfect visuals. Many of these idols are also known to the public by their unique stage names that make them stand out in the group.
But did you know that some of these idols have unique stories behind their stage name choices? Here are 6 idols who refused the stage names suggested by Lee Soo Man and eventually debuted with different names. Let's take a look!
Initially, Lee Soo Man proposed the name "Pickle" for Tony An of H.O.T. because it was deemed suitable for the idol's fresh image. Fortunately, the suggestion was rejected and he debuted with the name "Tony," which is the English version of his own name.
Super Junior leader, Leeteuk, received several stage name suggestions. The first suggestion was "Kangsu", which means rain to bring "rain to the music industry". The second suggestion was "Shin-i", which means someone sent by God. In the end, the chosen name was the last suggestion, "Leeteuk", which means "special child".
The first stage name suggestion for Shindong from Super Junior came from his birth name, which is "Woo-dong" and was considered suitable for his image. The second suggestion given by Lee Soo Man was "Dong-chun", the name of a Korean circus group that was active at that time. The last name proposed was "Shin-don". This name was rejected because it was the same as the title of a drama being aired at that time. The suggestion of the name "Shin-don" was eventually changed to "Shindong".
Super Junior's maknae, Kyuhyun, was also planned to debut with a different name. Kyuhyun was given the name "Gwi-hyun" because Lee Soo Man believed that the name "Kyuhyun" was difficult to pronounce. That name also means precious, which would be very suitable for Kyuhyun. Due to their manager's rejection, Kyuhyun eventually debuted with his birth name.
EXO's Sehun was supposed to debut with the stage name "Se-eul", but it was rejected by the agency staff because it sounded similar to the name of the city Seoul. Eventually, Sehun debuted with his birth name.
The last one is not a stage name, but a group name. Initially, Lee Soo Man suggested three names for TVXQ. The first name was "The Five Viscera and the Six Entrails", which symbolized that the five members of this group would not leave each other, like internal organs. The second name was "Swordsman", where Lee Soo Man was inspired by a film released at that time. TVXQ eventually debuted with the third and final suggested name, "Dong Bang Shin Ki", which means "Rising Gods from the East".
