Voice of Baceprot's Past Story: Difficult to Get Parent's Permission Until Being Bullied by School Friends

Kapanlagi.com - The name Voice of Baceprot has recently been dominating the headlines of mass media. This band from Garut presents a very anti-mainstream concept, where its trio members, Marsya, Sitti, and Widi, choose metal as their music genre. What is even more unique, Marsya and her friends always perform wearing hijab.

There is nothing wrong with the concept of hijab-wearing metalheads. However, it cannot be denied that this is still very rare to find, both in Indonesia and around the world. It's no wonder that Marsya and her friends' concept often invites pros and cons.

"Of course, there will always be pros and cons, and indeed there are quite a few. But we think it's because it's still not common. So people see, in our environment at that time, women playing metal while wearing hijab was not common, not many were doing it. Usually, it's more common to play traditional music like marawis and such," said Marsya, the guitarist and vocalist, during a recent online interview with KapanLagi.com.

Thanks to their courage to be different, VoB can easily attract public attention and now they have become popular. However, it should also be emphasized that Marsya, Sitti, and Widi also have extraordinary musical skills beyond all the debates about their appearance.

1. Parents Prohibited and School Friends Teased

Not only outsiders, even Marsya's parents were initially quite surprised by their children's decision to become a metalhead. However, as time went on, they slowly began to allow their daughters' desires.

"Initially, it was difficult for the parents to give permission, so for example, if there was an event, we had to lie because it was hard to get permission. So maybe they thought that music, especially metal, is associated with negative things," Marsya continued.

Since they were in junior high school, Marsya, Sitti, and Widi often listened to metal songs. Even their music taste was considered strange by their peers.

"It's not like that for people outside. If we listen to songs like that (metal) at school, there are usually people who tease us, saying, 'Why are you listening to possessed music?'. But we just stay relaxed, we respond with laughter because indirectly they also listen to it, even though they tease," Marsya concluded.

2. Performing at One of the World's Largest Metal Music Festivals

Voice of Baceprot themselves have achieved remarkable success on the international stage. In 2022, they will officially be one of the performers at the world's largest metal festival, Wacken Open Air 2022. Just imagine, Marsya CS will be performing alongside Slipknot, Judas Priest, and many others.

The news of VoB's inclusion in the lineup for Wacken Open Air 2022 was first announced on Saturday (6/26) through the official Instagram account of Wacken Open Air. The event, held annually in Germany, is scheduled to take place from August 4th to August 8th.
