Indonesia is not doing well. The numerous new government policies deemed absurd and not pro-people have made citizens run out of patience. Thousands of students united under the Indonesian Student Alliance (BEM SI) took to the streets to conduct a mass demonstration to voice their concerns. Check out the photos below..
On Monday (17/02/2025), thousands of students from different universities united under BEM-SI crowded the Horse Statue area in Jakarta.
This action by the students is a form of concern over the new policies issued by the government under the leadership of Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming.
The action began around 4 PM, where students from the University of Indonesia, Bogor Agricultural Institute, Bandung Institute of Technology, UPN Veteran Jakarta, and other campuses gathered in the Monas area.
They marched in unison towards the Horse Statue while shouting, 'Long live the students!', 'Revoke the budget efficiency policy!'.
The demonstrators read out about 13 demands to the government during the action, ranging from education issues to reshuffling the Red and White Cabinet.
Some of the rejected policies include cuts to the education budget and opposition to the proposed revisions of several laws, including the Prosecutor's Law, the Police Law, and the Military Law.
A series of banners with various expressions of the people's hearts were displayed at various points. All of them carry a tone of criticism and dissatisfaction with the performance of the current government cabinet.
The police were also deployed to stand guard and restrain the crowd, and they appeared to be using complete protective gear. Some friction occurred, although it did not lead to fatal consequences.
From KapanLagi's observations, this demonstration is not only taking place in Jakarta but also in several other major cities. The goal is the same, to reject government policies that are deemed not pro-people.
This demonstration is also said to continue consecutively for several days to come, until the government is willing to truly listen to the aspirations of the people.
