Thursday morning (15/8), Malang residents were shocked by a demonstration carried out by the Papua Student Alliance (AMP) and the Indonesian People's Front for West Papua (FRIWP) to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the New York Agreement which fell on August 15. The demonstration, which initially started peacefully, turned violent due to clashes with local residents who felt disturbed. This is a photo of the mass riots that occurred in the Kayu Tangan area, Malang this morning, Thursday (15/8) at around 09.00 AM.

With the intention of holding a peaceful action to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the New York Agreement, the Papua Student Alliance (AMP) and the Indonesian People's Front for West Papua (FRIWP) were instead considered to disturb the security of the people of Malang.

Despite being doubted by the local residents, it turns out that AMP and FRIWP have reported a notification letter for the peaceful action to the Malang City Police.

Unfortunately, the police failed to secure the demonstration which resulted in riots and caused injuries to several residents and protesters.

After a considerable amount of time, the protesters were finally secured on Kahuripan Street next to BCA Bank.

The police who crowded the area tried to control the angry residents and the demonstrators who had clashed. Officers blocked all access roads around the location, causing long traffic jams at several points.

After the incident, the AMP and FRIWP masses were forced to get on police trucks. They were secured and left the location to be sent home.

The Malang Kota Police Chief, AKBP Asfuri, stated, "We are sending them back home. We are not detaining them, there was temporary security in front of UMM."

Currently, the situation is back to normal, with only a few remaining debris from the clashes and slightly broken traffic lights. The streets of Malang Kota are now clear and flowing smoothly as before.
