Darlane Litaay: An Inspirational Figure, Returns to Papua to Teach After Graduating with a Master's Degree in New York

Art and technology are often seen as two different worlds. However, Darlane Litaay proves that both can go hand in hand and complement each other.

Darlane Litaay is an inspirational figure from Papua. She is a recipient of the LPDP scholarship and pursued her Master's degree at City University of New York. Before continuing her Master's studies, Darlane took a gap year for 10 years.

"After graduating with a GPA of 4.0 from the City University of New York, Darlene chose to return to Papua to teach dance integrated with technology at ISBI Tanah Papua. From Sorong to New York, she is taking innovation to the next level," wrote the account @kemenkeuri on Thursday (4/9).

Darlene majored in Performance and Interactive Media Arts. Before continuing to her Master's degree, it turns out Darlene took two majors simultaneously in her Bachelor's degree.

"I studied for my Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering in Yogyakarta at AKPRIND, the name of the campus. At the same time, I also studied for my Bachelor's in Dance at ISI Yogyakarta," she explained in an IG post by @majalahmediakeuangan.

After graduating with a bachelor's degree, Darlane decided to travel to gain experience outside of campus. "I took a 10-year gap year from my bachelor's to my master's. During those 10 years, I traveled back and forth to Europe, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, everywhere, to seek as much experience as possible," said Darlane.

"While I was also teaching at ISBI in Papua, at that time as a bachelor's lecturer, you know, you have your bachelor's degree and then you can't do anything outside the fence, because to qualify you need a master's degree to enter the system. So I finally decided, okay I need to go to school," he continued.

When asked why Darlane returned to Papua, he answered without hesitation. "Because it's home man," he concluded.

Darlane feels that he must go home because he can have a greater impact in Papua. Hopefully, Darlane can be an inspiration to young people in Indonesia. "My students at ISBI in Papua, I encourage 'you have to become better than me'," said Darlane.
