Deris Nagara becomes the first President of BEM from Indonesia at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) Columbia University for the 2023-2024 period.
This young man from Ciamis, West Java has achieved many accomplishments. In addition to being the President of the Student Council, Deris was also selected as the ASEAN-Korean Youth Ambassador on January 31, 2023.
In October 2022, Deris was also invited to participate in a discussion at The United Nations Higher Education and Multilateralism forum commemorating UN Day.
Deris Nagara's struggle to achieve these accomplishments can be considered not easy. Before being accepted at Columbia University, Deris was rejected by many Indonesian universities.
Deris failed to enter a state university, so he decided to search for scholarships. Despite his family's difficult situation, Deris chose to enter President University through a scholarship program.
He had to give up the Medical Department and choose the International Relations Department. However, this is where Deris' struggle begins.
In addition to academic fields, Deris is also quite active in several non-academic activities. He is a member of the Paguyuban Mojang Jajaka Ciamis, theater, dance, and karawitan.
From his struggle, Deris is now the only Indonesian student serving as the President of BEM at Columbia University, United States.
