Founder of Kompas Group Jakob Oetama Passed Away at the Age of 88

"The founder of Kompas Gramedia, a national press figure, Mr. Jakob Oetama, has passed away," said the statement from Kompas TV.

As reported by Kompas TV, the deceased's family has arrived at Mitra Keluarga Kelapa Gading Hospital in North Jakarta. The body will be taken to the funeral home at Kompas Gramedia Building, Jakarta.

1. Jakob Oetama's Career Journey

Jakob Oetama is a senior Indonesian journalist known as the founder and owner of Kompas Gramedia Group. Born on September 27, 1931, he began his career as a journalist by becoming an editor at the weekly magazine Penabur in 1956.

In 1963, he published the magazine Insitari together with his fellow journalist, PK Ojong. Two years later, they established the daily newspaper Kompas on June 28, 1965. Under his leadership, Kompas has grown rapidly and now has several subsidiaries, ranging from those engaged in mass media, printing, to universities.

Not satisfied with his achievements, Jakob then initiated the idea of establishing an English-language media outlet in Indonesia. This is where the story of the creation of The Jakarta Post begins, which was first published on April 25, 1983.

In addition to his work in the media, Jakob is also active in several press organizations. He has served as a mentor to the central management of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) and an advisor to the Confederation of ASEAN Journalists.

Jakob has received various academic awards during his lifetime. These include an honorary doctorate in communication from Gajah Mada University and the Bintang Mahaputra Utama (The Most Exalted Star) from the Indonesian government in 1973.
