7 Portraits of Nirina Zubir Caring for Dozens of Cats at Home, Reminiscing Dramatic Moments of Saving a Cat While Biking

Having dozens of cats at home is certainly not an easy thing. However, for Nirina Zubir, it is part of her love for animals. Often, the cats she cares for come from spontaneous rescue actions on the street.

The wife of Ernest Fardiyan Syarif revealed that her decision to care for many cats often comes without planning. She and her husband often can't bear to see abandoned cats on the streets.

"Actually, I already have so many at home, there were originally 24 cats," she said when met in the Senayan area, Central Jakarta, Thursday (3/7/2025).

"If it's not my husband who suddenly brings home a cat, it's because we see one on the street and think, 'ah, why is this little one on the street and so skinny, poor thing,'" she continued.

One of the most memorable experiences was when she rescued a cat that she named Flick. That moment happened while she and her family were taking a break during a cycling activity.

"Then there was one that we adopted, for some reason I really remember the name Flick, he was really a cat, I don't know why we fell in love, at that time we were cycling," she reminisced.

Flick's condition at that time was very concerning. However, there was a strange bond that made Nirina feel she had to help him.

"If that time it was really a cat, skinny, frail, his eyes were all messed up, but for some reason (when called) suddenly he came, like 'huh how did he come?'," said Nirina.

Without thinking twice, Nirina immediately put the cat into her bicycle bag and took it home. That moment felt like destiny for her.

"Finally, there’s a bag on my bicycle, suddenly, 'hey, wanna join?', then I put it in the bag, it came out like that, and then, riding the bike, its hand was just sticking out like that, well, it was meant to be," she recounted.

To manage her dozens of cats, Nirina has her own system. She divides the area for her cats to keep them comfortable. "Thank God, I mean, it's divided so there are cats below, and there are cats in the room," she concluded.
