Admitting Guilt, Jeff Smith Asks for Ganja Not to Be Classified as Class 1 Narcotics

"First of all, I apologize to my extended family and the people I love, and I also want to apologize to all Indonesian citizens because I have done something wrong and something that should not be emulated," said Jeff Smith at West Jakarta Metro Police, Monday (19/4/2021).

1. Jeff Smith's Concern

On that occasion, the 23-year-old man also expressed his concerns about marijuana. Unfortunately, his concerns were stopped by the police as they were considered to be rambling.

"Furthermore, in my opinion, marijuana is not worthy of being categorized as a class 1 narcotic, and Indonesia must conduct research as soon as possible," said Jeff Smith.

2. Serious Punishment for Marijuana Consumers

It is important to know that in Indonesia, marijuana is classified as a type 1 drug under the Narcotics Act, along with methamphetamine, cocaine, opium, and heroin.

Article 8 paragraph (1) of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics states that type 1 narcotics are prohibited for health purposes.

Law 35 of 2009 also prohibits consumption, production, and distribution. Those who produce and distribute drugs will face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment or the death penalty, while drug abusers will be sentenced to a minimum of 4 years in prison.

Interestingly, in 2020, the United Nations approved the World Health Organization's recommendation to remove marijuana from the category of the world's most dangerous drugs and allow its use for medical purposes.
