Ahmad Dhani and Melly Goeslaw Prepare Copyright Law Revisions, Highlight Ambiguous Sentences

Kapanlagi.com - Musician Ahmad Dhani revealed his plan to revise several points in the Copyright Law. Together with Melly Goeslaw, he believes there are sentences in the law that are still ambiguous and could lead to future debates.

"Certainly, the initiation for the revision of the Copyright Law has been made, with Melly Goeslaw as the initiator, and we will oversee it together," said Ahmad Dhani at the Al Barkat Carpet Palace, Fatmawati, South Jakarta, on Monday (17/2/2025).

This revision comes after an issue involving Agnez Mo and Ari Bias regarding permission to perform the song Bilang Saja. According to Dhani, this case highlights the need for clearer regulations to avoid similar debates in the future. "This is especially for singers, because the public is already aware of the need to ask for permission," he said.

1. Will Be Corrected

One of Dhani's concerns is a sentence in the Copyright Law that is considered confusing. The sentence particularly relates to the rights of song creators in limiting the use of their works.

"We will correct it so that the sentence in the law is not open to multiple interpretations and does not lead to polemics in the future. We will clarify the definitive sentence, and that will start in the month of Ramadan. There is a sentence in the law or the Minister's Decree that says, 'Song Creators Are Prohibited from Prohibiting'," he explained.

2. Hoping the Law Distinguishes Between Personal and Professional Use of Songs

Dhani believes that the regulation needs to be clarified so that song creators still have the right to manage its use in a commercial context. "For example, if a cafe band wants to use my song, I cannot prohibit that. Perhaps that is the intent of the law, so I cannot prohibit all hotels and cafes from playing my song," he explained.

He hopes that the revision can later distinguish between the use of songs for personal purposes and professional performances. "Perhaps later in the law it can be clarified that the prohibition can be enforced for professional performances," he said.

3. The Importance of Singers' Understanding of Copyright

Ahmad Dhani also highlighted the importance of singers' understanding of copyright. He emphasized that copyright is always attached to its creator, so its use for commercial purposes should still require permission.

"Copyright is attached to its creator. So the prohibition is fine as long as it is done for commercial purposes. Well, there might be many singers who don't understand this," he concluded.
