Ammar Zoni is Still Considering an Appeal After 7-Year Prison Sentence

The panel of judges at the West Jakarta District Court has sentenced Ammar Zoni to seven years in prison. Responding to the verdict, Ammar Zoni's attorney, Jon Mathias, stated that they have not made a final decision to accept or reject it.

Jon Mathias emphasized that they fully respect the decision made by the panel of judges. However, Ammar Zoni's legal status is currently not yet legally binding or final as there is still time for a review.

"We as the legal representative respect that decision first, because it is the judge's right. Now, Ammar should think it over first. There is still a time frame of 7 days," said Jon Mathias when met at the West Jakarta District Court on Tuesday (27/08/2024).

According to Jon, legal action should not be taken hastily. There are procedures and a seven-day period provided by law for the defendant to determine the next legal steps.

The lawyers also opened the possibility for various other legal efforts if necessary. Jon mentioned that an appeal is just one option among many steps that his client can take.

"Yes, there are legal efforts. As the judge said, this is not final yet, not conclusive. Right? So, an appeal could be submitted, right? There could also be a reconsideration request, right? An amnesty could be requested, an abolition could be requested, there are many legal efforts. So just be patient for now," explained Jon Mathias.

Jon ensures that Ammar needs quiet time to think rationally without involving emotions. This is important so that the legal steps taken are truly targeted.

"Yes, of course he is discussing what steps will be taken. That's how it is. Because he is still thinking. Yes, because in that decision it cannot be immediate, that's how it is. Because the law has heavy considerations, so he has thoughts, thinking it over first," he asserted.
