On June 9, 2024, the city of Kanuma, Japan, held a mayoral election. The campaign flyer distributed by one of the teams has sparked controversy as it potentially violates copyright laws.
The flyer shows illustrations similar to the anime poster THE FIRST SLAM DUNK (2022), raising copyright infringement issues for their campaign team.

The campaign flyer distributed to the public by the Kobayashi campaign team is very similar to the movie poster THE FIRST SLAM DUNK. The essence of the illustration above is Mikio Kobayashi, the candidate for mayor (front), Toshimitsu Mogi, the party's secretary-general (second from the right), and Tomiichi Fukuda, the governor (back).
The flyer contains the phrase "Total Effort" and also a slightly sensitive sentence "If we give up, the city of Kanuma will end here".
Hiroyuki Nakajima, a lawyer handling copyright infringement cases, highlighted the similarities between the campaign brochure and the movie poster THE FIRST SLAM DUNK. "The number of people, poses, clothing, and overall composition strongly resemble the THE FIRST SLAM DUNK poster. There is a risk of copyright infringement based on the adaptation rights law" he emphasized.

In response to this, a senior official from the Kobayashi campaign team explained in an interview about their flyer. He said that the flyer was created by a young staff member who was inspired by a poster displayed by a brand in a mall. He also added that before distributing the flyer, they did not research to find out the potential copyright issues.
Despite the case, Mikio Kobayashi (70) was defeated in the Kanuma mayoral election by Shoichi Matsui (58).
